It was a mystery; it was a guessing game.

We dropped our cryptic hints, but neither spoke a name.

You held him in your heart but he was in mine too.

So identical in tastes; what are we gonna do?

'Cause if he chooses you then I'll be all alone

Will I be bitter? Will my heart just turn to stone?

But how could I betray you, if he prefers my style instead?

To do so would be to stab you and leave you there for dead.

We've been through so much together; I don't know where to start

Will this test of friendship draw us close or wrench us both apart?

Whatever happens with this guy I just want you to know:

You've been the truest friend to me; won't ever let you go.

How ironic that our friendship could be threatened by an interest shared.

For any other matter it's the least we would've cared.

It's even funnier to realise neither of us stand a chance

Please don't let this summer squall knock us off our balance.

Despite our near-miss fallout it's back to normal now

We're closer now than ever; please just don't ask me how.

We still have that same impossible goal

We're working at it together; is it just me or is that droll?

Amazingly we harbour no resentment

As kindred spirits we share rue disappointment

Life doesn't stop, no matter who or what

All that matters is being with you; I don't care what else I've got.
