*~Prologue~*
The night was still young as the old Mercedes Convertible rolled across the empty country road. A light breeze danced through the rolling wheat fields that ran across the land for miles. Whispers could be heard from the old car, a small girl's giggle lifted it's way into the night air. A middle-aged couple sat in front two seats of the vintage car, the ones making the small talk. The swift breeze made the woman's strawberry blonde fly back and the car zoomed across the long country road. Her bright blue eyes twinkled in the dark of the night as she looked over at her husband driving. His own short dark hair rustled slightly in the wind, his green eyes watching the road but occasionally flickering over to meet his wife's loving gaze. The husband then glanced up into the rear-view mirror at two teenage girls in the back, his daughters.
One was awake while the other was sleeping quietly next to her. The twin that was awake had her head rested on the seat's back wearing a pair of washed out jean shorts and an over-sized sweatshirt with a local college's logo on the front. One of her legs were crossed over the other as she moved herself in a comfortable sitting position. The girl's feet were bare and slightly dirty, her old pair of faded blue converse thrown across the car floor under her. The twin's tousled auburn hair flowed loosely over her shoulders in soft waves, framing her almost doll-like face. Her fair skin looked even paler in the moonlight, the same as her sister's. She had her father's intelligent and vibrant green eyes that were beginning to droop ever so slightly, a sign that she was soon to follow her sister into a deep sleep.
The other twin stirred in her sleep her head landing on her twins leg. Her long blonde hair cover her face as she slept on though not softening the snores coming from the girl. Her green-blue eyes fluttered in the night as she tugged her long sleeved shirt closer to her body. The girl looked like a spitting image of her mother. Her strength and instincts, even her hair. It was only another second before she fell back into a deep sleep.
The vintage Mercedes stopped at a four way intersection, each direction was completely barren of any automobiles. Not a single car except the family's own drove on this country rode. The convertible started again as the whispers eventually softened down to silence. The mother looked up at the bright moon with a tight frown on her face. "Is that?" she asked softly but with urgency. Her husband looked over at her suddenly, his green eyes glowing in the moonlight with mixed emotions.
The woman's voice was over powered by a loud bang that echoed in the night. In that same second the woman's head lolled forward as her body shuddered suddenly with the impact of the bullet. A half second after that another bang exploded through darkness, hitting the second target; the man. His hands slid off the steering wheel as he fell forward, the only thing holding him back was his seat belt. The car accelerated as there was a sudden heavy pressure applied to it and turned to the left free from the man's grip, right into the wheat field.
Lucy, the auburn haired twin, who was beginning to fall asleep, was suddenly woken abruptly by the two gun shots and the violent jerking of the car. Without a second thought, she wrapped her arms protectively and tightly around her sister and held her close, shielding the blonde girl from the on coming danger. Her sister, Ava, had woken dazed and confused. Still rubbing her eyes only knowing of the loud noise, not of it's effect. She had felt her sister's arms around her and her eyes flew open. The car sped forward, heading straight to the trees of a nearby forest and...
CRASH!
The sound of the car smashing into the tree echoed across the country fields, causing a sudden flock of birds to fly from the forest in alarm. The crash was a straight on collision, the car front almost forming around the trunk of the tree. The front of the car steamed as smoke billowed from under the dented hood of the car. Lucy and Ava were suddenly jerked forward at the impact, the only thing saving them from being thrown out of the seats were their seat belts.
Lucy gasped, feeling the pain of the air get punched out of her lungs from the tightness of the seat belts pulling her back. Ava doubled over, her stomach taking the blow of the seat belt. She coughed dryly from the pressure. Ava looked at the front seat, a scream escaped her lips before she could control it. Their mother was sprawled out on a dashboard, a pool of blood emerging from her head. Their father was the same, slumped over the steering wheel, bleeding from the head just like his wife.
"Mom.... Dad....?" Lucy's voice shook. Ava looked over at Lucy, seeing her sister look over at her parents with wide tearful eyes, like she was expecting this all to be a joke and their parents would suddenly get up, smiling and laughing. Lucy's body shook suddenly as she began to sob. Ava felt her cheeks suddenly become wet with tears. She buried her tear stained face in her hands.
"M-Mommy," She gasped, "D-Daddy..."
Lucy wrapped her arms around the sobbing Ava, she herself screaming frantically. She buried her face into Ava's light blonde hair, her cheeks soaked with tears.
A rustling in the wheat field behind the destroyed car caught Lucy's attention suddenly. She wiped her head around, her eyes wide and still glistening with tears. Her breath came out in ragged gasps. What she saw shocked her almost as much as seeing her parents death. A figure clothed in all black stood in the middle of the path made by the out of control car. The figure of the person stood there for a moment before darting into the wheat stalks, as if the person were never there in the first place. Suddenly brought back to reality, Lucy and Ava clutched onto each other for dear life as they wailed and mourned at the death of their parents, tears running down their faces. They were the only thing they had left in the world, each other.
