Toby's point of view: the same night two years ago
Spencer and I had been fighting for so long, I had to make a grand gesture. And I knew just what to do. She had always been a romantic. I headed for her hotel, practicing over and over what I was going to say. I went into the lobby.
I saw her. We made eye contact and she pretending like she didn't see me. I discreetly rolled my eyes. "Spencer, stop"
She turned around. "Hey, Toby"
"We've been fighting for so long and I don't want to do this anymore. You can't deny what we have is magnetic. All we do is fight, but somehow fate keeps making us bump into each other.""this is where I live Toby, I don't think you came here for the spa"
Ooh, she got me there. Crap. I should've thought that one through better.
"Look, you either want to be with me, or you don't" She opened her mouth but I had to finish, "Meet me at our spot at 7 tonight. I'll be waiting. But at 7:02 I'm closing my heart to you forever." I turned around and left before she said anything else. I just looked down and silently prayed. please please please let this work.
~~
I rushed home to my loft and looked at the time 5:45. Ok I have a while. But not that long. I should probably just head over now so I'm prepared. I grabbed her scrabble necklace and bought her favorite flowers on the way to the hotel room.
I got there and just waited. Time passed. 6:30. Then it was 6:45.
...then it was 7:02.
I waited a few more minutes. Then I left. I didn't want to wait for something that was never going to happen.
~~
I dragged myself back to my loft, thinking over and over what else I could have done. I sat on my couch and felt sorry for myself. There was nothing else I could do.
I heard a knock at the door. I looked up. "Spencer?"
"um no it's Jenna. Can you open up I forgot my keys." My heart sank. Stupid of me to get my hopes up. I opened the door. Her eyes looked straight through me. Sometimes I liked it better when she couldn't see. Too bad her surgery was successful.
She walked in. She knew about what I was planning to do with Spencer. She was flirting and I needed her to back off. But when she saw my tears, she had realized that I had failed.
We both sat on the couch next to each other. I just looked forward at the wall, emotionless. "I did the most romantic thing possible...and it didn't work"
"I'm sorry." I didn't respond and continued to look at the wall. "Well, I got my key so I'm just gonna go."
"you can stay if you want"
"really? you want me to stay."
"It's better than being alone."
I turned my gaze, making eye contact. All I could think about was how I needed to forget. I needed to move on. This was an opportunity...
One last tear left my eye as we made our way to the bedroom. I needed to move on. This isn't bad. I need to forget. This isn't bad. I needed to move on. I need to forget. This isn't bad.
Eventually I had convinced myself.
~~
After it was all over, I still didn't feel better. I probably won't for a while. I probably shouldn't have done that. But I did. And it's over now, and there's nothing I could do. But then the unthinkable happened.
"Toby? Toby where are you?"
I quickly put on a robe. "Spencer! Spencer is that you??" Jenna got up. Anger filled her eyes. I gave her look that said I was sorry. But I really wasn't all that much. I only had one thing on my mind.
I ran out to see a beautiful face wearing the necklace and holding the flowers. I smile spread across my face. "you came."
She chuckled. "yeah I did. Melissa went into labor that's why I was so late." I smiled even bigger. She didn't forget about me. All this time I was trying to forget when she never did. But I continued to smile, because I was beyond happy.
"That doesn't matter. All that matters is you came. And your here now." I ran over to her and kissed her while I held her in my arms bridally. She laughed
"I'm so glad I did." I put her downJenna intentionally made a noise. "Toby is someone back there?"
"No. No one." I lied.
And as if it was on cue, Jenna walked out with a smug look on her face. "Actually, there is someone in here."Spencer put the pieces together and looked up at me. Tears filled her big brown eyes. "You didn't" she said while shaking her head.
I walked toward her and she backed away "Spencer."
"You did."
She ripped her necklace off and ran out. No, I had to catch her.
"Spencer no wait!"
She mumbled something I couldn't hear. Once reality set in, my face went angry and I turned to Jenna.
"HOW COULD YOU DO THIS!!" I screamed at her.
"She deserved to know."
I was going to fight back but she wasn't worth my breath. She wasn't worth anything. "Get out"
"Toby"
"NOW"
She scurried out the door. I slammed it behind her. My face fell into my hands, and for the first time this whole night, I really cried.
