I walked upstairs towards the kid's bedroom. I peeped in to see them playing with their toys. I smiled.
"Hey, kiddies. What are you guys doing?"I asked. They looked my way and smiled. "Playing. Come play with us, Mommy!"Haze said. I walked over and sat down criss-cross on the floor between them.
"What're those?"Maria asked, pointing to the papers in my hands. "Oh! They're letters from Aunty Rouge and Crys,"I smiled. "Really?! What do they say?"asked Maria and Haze in unison.
I looked down at the letters. "Uh...they say some very nice things. Like, how they miss you and that they love you. They said they can't wait to see you again,"I said. Maria smiled but Haze looked a bit confused.
"What's wrong, Haze?"I asked. "Mommy, is this our new house? Are we going to stay here forever?"he asked. "Why would you ask that?"I asked, tilting my head a bit.
He shrugged. "I don't know. I just miss our old house,"Haze said. "I sorta do too, Mommy. And w-what about school?"Maria asked.
Oh shoot. It is about time for them to start elementary school, isn't it? How could I forget?
"Everything is going to just fine. We're just staying here for a while until some very important grown up business is taken care of. Do you guys understand?"I asked.
They both nodded. "And as for school, I'm sure that you'll be able to go and make lots of new friends,"I smiled. They both smiled. I stood. "I'm going to take care of somethings. If you need me, just yell,"I said as I ruffled their quills.
They both nodded. I walked out of the room. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. Okay. So the kids really want to go to school. I'm surprised. When I was a kid, I didn't want anything to do with kindergarten.
I actually don't even know if the town has a school. What am I talking about? Of course it'll have a school.
I made my way to Carter's room. The door was closed. I gave it a gentle knock. "Carter, it's me. I need to ask you a few questions,"I said loud enough for him to hear. The door opened.
"What's up, (Y/n)?"he smiled, his green eyes sparkling. "Can I come in?"I asked. He nodded and stepped aside. I walked inside and he closed the door.
I hope Shadow doesn't find out that I was in Carter's room. He'd have a frenzy.
"So, I was wondering...the kids are at the age were they should be in school. Do you think you could help me out with that?"I asked.
"(Y/n), I'm sorry to tell you but, I don't know if that's such a great idea with everything that's going on,"he replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"But they can't just stay here all the time. They need to get out and learn!"I said. "BUT! Think about it! What if something happens while they're at school? What can you do?"Carter countered.
"If something does happen, I'm going down to the school to beat some ass! But, Carter, I'm serious. Can you talk to GUN? Please?"I asked. More like begged.
"(Y/n), I seriously think-"
"I'm not taking 'no' for an answer. Either you call or I will and trust me. You do NOT want me to call,"I said.Carter sighed. "Fine. I'll call. I'll do what I can but if I can't do anything, then you can't blame me,"he said. I smiled. "I won't! I'll appreciate that you tried. Thank you,"I said. Carter smiled.
"You're welcome. I'll call now. Maybe I can get them to consider it,"he said. I nodded and walked to the door. I opened it. "You don't even know how much we appreciate this,"I smiled back at him. He smiled back. I left, closing the door behind me.
I made my way downstairs. Shadow was watching tv. I walked over and sat beside him, resting my head on his shoulder. He kissed my head.
Time went by fast. Before I knew it, I was in the kitchen, cooking dinner. Shadow was helping me while the kids were playing in the living room. I think Carter was in his room.
I was placing plates on the table while Shadow was taking the meatloaf out of the oven. Carter walked in with the biggest smile on his face.
"(Y/n), great news! I talked to GUN and they set up a meeting for tomorrow with a social worker in town to get the kids into school!"he said.
I smiled brightly. "Thank you so much, Carter! I really do appreciate this,"I said. "No problem but I'll have to escort you, if that's not a problem,"he said. I looked over at Shadow, who was just taking this all in. "Shadow, sweetheart, do you think you could watch Haze and Maria until Carter and I get back from town?"I asked.
"Yeah,"Shadow said, giving Carter this weird look. I nodded. "Alrighty then. Let's go ahead and eat. Haze! Maria! Dinner is ready!"I called out.
They came running into the kitchen. They sat at their seats. We all began to eat. Carter and I talked more about the meeting as we ate. It'd be around twelve o'clock and it's only a ten minute ride into town.
After dinner, Carter and the kids washed dishes. I was in Maria and Haze's room, getting their pajamas. I placed them on their beds.
I exited their room and made my way to me and Shadow's room. I laid myself some clothes out for tomorrow and got some clothes to put on after I take my shower. I walked into the bathroom and started the shower.
I stripped and got in, letting the warm water run through my fur. I heard the bathroom door open.
"Shadow, what are you doing?"I asked.
"I'm about to brush my teeth. What are you doing?"he asked. I peeked from behind the shower curtain. "I'm playing tennis. Duh. I'm taking a shower,"I said."And without me? I'm hurt, (Y/n),"Shadow said, pretend hurt painted on his face. I smiled and pulled the curtain back. "You'll get over it,"I said.
"Oh, that's mean,"Shadow said. I giggled. "Hey, you're going to be careful tomorrow, right?"Shadow asked. "Of course. I'm always careful,"I said, scrubbing my hair with shampoo. "I'm mean like extra careful. I don't want anything going wrong while I'm not there to protect you,"he said.
"Yeah, but if anything happens I can protect myself. If you want proof, then go back five years in time. Don't worry, I'll be fine. If something happens, I want you to worry about the kids first then me. Okay?"
"Okay. Hurry up. I wanna hug my wife,"Shadow said. I giggled and washed the suds out of my hair and fur. I wrung out my hair and turned off the water. I grabbed a towel off the rack and wrapped it around my body before stepping out of the tub.
Before Shadow even had the chance to grab me, I spun around him and ran into the bedroom. "Sorry! I gotta dry off first,"I smiled. "That was a dirty move,"Shadow pouted.
I giggled. "How can it be dirty if I just got out the shower?"I asked. Shadow gave me the 'really, (Y/n)?' look. I just smiled.
