The Europeans explored the world to find spices to sell to get money and long lasting food slaves to collect precious stones and gold to pay for all the wars and to increase land. They also traveled the world to spread their Christianity; they also traveled to have greater knowledge about the world.

The Batavia was owned by the Dutch East India company. The commander of the Batavia was Francesco Pelsaert. The Batavia was carrying 280,000 silver coins and over 200 passengers. The Batavia was heading to a country that was known as Batavia, Batavia is now known as Indonesia. The Batavia was sailing with other ships. The Batavia was on her maiden sail to the country Batavia.

The Batavia crashed in the roaring forties, the crew mistimed and crashed by hitting a rock and hit the reef.The Batavia crashed on the 4th of June 1629.During the early 1600s, Dutch trading ships sailed along the coast of Western Australia some of these ships were wrecked on the treacherous coast. One of the most famous shipwrecks claimed 60 lives. The Batavia wreck was discovered by divers and fishermen they found artifacts from the Batavia and took them to the maritime museum and shipwreck museums in fremantle.
