Half Human [#Wattys2016]

A Duo

We didn't say anything to each other until we reached the forest.

"What do we do now?" He asks.

"We build a nest."

"You're joking." He starts mildly laughing.

"Do you want to survive?"

"You were serious."He says with his mouth wide open staring at me in disbelief.

"Yes, the ground thrives with decorats."

"What are decorats?" I think he thinks I've gone mad or he's not explored before his village was raided.

Our village loved exploring but we explore in large groups, that's why I know so much. Stop thinking about it.  The village is in the past.

"Decorats are small rats with large sharp teeth, long tails, smaller legs and red eyes. They live in enormous groups of nearly 500 and feed on large mammals like us. They burrow deep underground at day and feed at night so if you touch the ground they devour you almost immediately. They also go by the name of land piranhas."

I fly up the tree to two close branches, get a long leaf and tie the two branches together. Using the two branches I weave a nest under 10 minutes and a second one a few meters below for Travis and a little bigger assuming humans don't curl up in their sleep.

"How long will this be because I'm planning on sleeping."

I'm not planning on sleep tonight, because forest fires happen almost daily in this forest but I decide not to tell him because he seems confused as it is.

At the last rays of sunlight start to fade away it's complete. I lay down in my nest and ponder as I look at the few stars I can see.

"Can't u carry me up there."

Demanding human.

"You might not have wings but you can climb."

He sighs so loudly that I can hear it from my nest. It surprised me he climbed to his in just about half an hour.

He lays down with his legs dangling from the edge of his nest and says,"Are we going to travel as a duo."

"I guess so."
