Some Nights
It had been almost a whole year after you, Steve, and Sam found Bucky again, and now about five months since Bucky told you how he felt about you. He loved you not only because of how patient you were with him, but because of how you could relate to him. You too had once been used to do evil, thinking you were doing good for the world, for a different group, though, not HYDRA. However, you had done it by your own free will, and you didn't have the luxury of being brainwashed. You remembered every single detail of what you'd done.
You and Bucky now shared a room in the Avengers Tower, partially because you were in a relationship, and because of the nightmares you both had. Even though he was mostly back to his old self, he was different when he had these dreams, more hurt and still scarred by his past. It had been a long time since you'd used your skills to do anything bad, so your nightmares were down to a minimum, but his were still poisoning his sleep almost nightly. And tonight, you knew they were especially bad.
Feeling that the space beside you in your bed was empty, you groggily opened your eyes to see where he'd gone. Outside, the night sky was dark, sprinkled with tiny spots of starlight, shining through the barrier of the city lights. You turned over to look at the clock on the nightstand, and it read 2 in the morning. You slowly got up and looked in your bathroom to see if the light was on, but Bucky wasn't there. Sighing, you put on a sweatshirt and got ready to find him.
"Jarvis, where's Bucky?" you asked quietly, trying not to wake anyone else up.
"I believe he is in the training room," he answered.
You headed off quietly, and the closer you got to the training room, the louder the pounding of fists hitting a punching bag got. As you rounded the corner, you saw him relentlessly beating one of the many punching bags lined up on the floor. He'd taken his shirt of, and you had to stop yourself from smiling. You'd seen him shirtless several times, but it still caught you by surprise. In the dim lights, you could see sweat glistening off his body, indicating he'd been there for a while.
As you made your way over to one of the benches, you started to hear him sniffling. Was he crying?
You sat down, making it creek under our weight, and Bucky spun his head around to you in surprise.
His eyes were red and teary, and his face was contorted into that of nothing but pain. But he didn't say a word, he just turned back around and kept on punching. You sighed and stood again, going up to him and setting a hand on his back comfortingly, making him stop.
"Come back to bed, Buck..." you cooed. He stopped throwing punches and relaxed under your touch.
"I can't..." he replied. "They're getting worse..."
"But I'm cold," you tried cutely, pouting. He still didn't turn back around to you. "You don't have to sleep, you could talk about it."
Bucky shook his head slightly, then finally turned and wrapped his arms around your torso, burying is face in the crook of your neck. You hugged him back tightly, feeling him shake in time with his silent sobs. You felt your own tears start coming, and you stroked his hair slowly to comfort him.
Slowly you began to lead him to the bench, sitting him down. Taking his hands, you took the wraps off of them.
"Come on..." you rubbed his shoulder and ran it down his metal arm to take his hand. You do that instinctively now, from trying to get him the confidence that he wouldn't hurt anyone just from touching them with it.
He was still hesitant, so you gave him the same look you'd always give him when he was like this. You saw him visibly loosen up, and he finally started following you to the door. Grabbing his shirt on the way out, you made sure he stayed close to you.
Once back to your bedroom, you got him back to bed and you kept your arms around him to comfort him.
"Do you want to talk about what your dream was about?" you asked into his hair.
You felt his shallow breathing hitch for a moment, then he sighed.
"I... it was about you... HYDRA took you away from me..."
Tears welled in your eyes when you realized how much of his fear was from someone taking you away from him.
"Bucky, I'm not going anywhere," you reassured him. His grip tightened around you.
"I love you so much, (Y/N)... it would kill me if I didn't have you," he said.
"I love you too, Bucky."
