There are many critical points of how to make an appealing character for your story. This list will guide you through the art of character creating.
1. Make your character a character you can relate to.
Your character should have characteristics of any average viewer.
-They should not have beautifully long hair that majestically flows behind them.
-They should not have alternate personalities unless that is how the story goes.
-Your character should have some sort of soft side, unless of course your character is created to be a robot or some incredibly cruel tyrant of the Middle Ages.2. Your character should not be a Mary-sue or Gary-sue.
The character you are giving birth to should not be perfect!
- Your character should not be perfectly shaped and beautiful, as well as having the ability to sing like a dove.
- Your character shouldn't be some badass Russian spy who has beautiful, long, golden, hair. That just doesn't work, like, won't her hair get in the way when she's fighting or get stained with blood or something?
- Your character shouldn't be a top-rate fashion designer but also a world famous guitarist.3. Your character should have a weakness, something that causes them to fail or die.
- Maybe your character could be really bad at P.E and Math, but can sing really well? Vice versa?
- Maybe your character could have weak ankles but be really good at wood carving?
- Maybe your character could be incredibly good at debating but not at cooking?4. Your character should have a realistic name.
-Now, if your character is from some sort of ancient culture where they name you after the elements, then your name should not be 'Fireheart Raindrop'.
-There should be no "Shadow Snakeskin".
-There should be no "Lemongrass Appletree".
You know what, I'm just going to provide a list of names that should not be used unless you are from a culture that uses these names.
-Pistol Bulletproof
-Stormcloud Sun
-Nix Waterdroplet
-Bearheart Warthog
-Ripple Flame
-Blueberry Lemines
I could list way more names, but my imagination is going through a fart.5. Your character should make sense.
This is a pretty basic rule, but a very important contribution to the story. It is similar to the rules stated above.
- Your character should not have issues making friends but be really open about their feelings.
- Your character shouldn't be quite and deadly, but be loud and klutzy when they hangout with people.
- Your character shouldn't be an over confident, happy, bubbly person inside and out, but also have low self esteem.6. Your character should have a goal.
Think of the question "what does my character want?". This question will help you create a realistic goal for your character.
-The character you are making should have something they are trying to achieve.
-Your character shouldn't just sit around and do nothing with their lives!
-Maybe your character could have a goal of being on the football team? It's as simple as that.
-Your character's goal shouldn't be something like "I want to rule the entire world and grow fairy wings!". NO. This rule doesn't apply if your story takes place in a magical village where nothing is impossible. So unless you're writing about that, follow this rule! These are the basic rules of creating an appealing character to the reader. Don't forget, I'm not an expert, but I do know a few things. If I forgot anything, please say in the comments! Bye-bye my little story writing grasshoppers!
