Like every day, I loudly threw my backpack on the table, climbed the ladder of a chair and sat on the flat, paint covered seat. I grabbed my headphones out of the side pocket and began to untangle the mess. After plugging them in to my phone, I put them in my ears and pressed play.
I grabbed my big book, the one with the sticker on the front cover. It was slightly crooked because I quickly slapped it on when I turned my book in for the first drawing. It tilted to the left and the corners were starting to lift.
I grabbed my pastels and threw my unzipped bag onto the floor bellow me. I picked up my phone and started looking through the same songs as the day before. no new ones had appeared in my sleep the night before so I picked the same song that starts off my day every morning.
Soap by Melanie Martinez was filling my head with bubbles and I enjoyed popping each one with the invisible arrow shooting across my brain.
I opened the pastels and looked at the purples, picked them all out and set them next to my now opened book. I picked one up and looked at the name, 'peachy purple plum'. I personally thought that was too many colors to describe one color. Still I pressed the pastel to my paper and started intermingling colors to make the perfect sky. "PAINTERLY, remember to keep everything painterly. Don't focus on making things realistic as you want to portray-" I turned my music up to drown out the sound of my art teachers voice. He wanted us to keep things painterly so we wouldn't try to perfect everything. He mostly didn't think any of us had the talent to make a pastel drawing look realistic, I agreed, but only to an extent.
My hand still held one of the many pastels and the pastels continued to build up... The color looked nothing like my reference. Sadly, I just continued to smear and mix colors.
I looked across the table to see the paper of one of the four aspiring artist. It was covered at the top with perfect cotton clouds. The colors Danced across his page. I looked up to see him also staring at his page. He smiled then would push his eyebrows together and would add something. He never messed it up, just made the perfection grow and grow.
I continued to work on my own, messing up and often taking my nail and scratching out the built up mess. Someone walked beside me and I felt their hand grab the cord to my right headphone. Despite what I expected they didn't yank it out of my hear, they softly pulled it and let it fall. "It looks good" the unfamiliar face looked me in the eyes and smiled. He turned around and left.
Apparently class was over and every other table was cleaned and wiped up. I quickly packet up all my stuff and went to wash my colorful hands. I went and picked up my bag and Preston stood next to me. I looked at him and he asked how much progress I made. I shook off the question and asked if he knew who the headphone guy was. Preston looked at me and asked "who?" With a blank stare. I turned and started walking out the door as I said never mind.
