We rushed down to the front desk almost racing. Once we reached the desk James let me call first. I called my mum and she didn't answer. James looked at me curiously as I waited for her to answer.
I sighed, "nothing... you can go" I said handing him the phone.
He nodded at me, "thanks" he said and called his mother. I waited as he talked to her, she was going to be there in about five minutes because they lived very close to the school. Once he hung up he handed me the phone.
"You can go if you need to" I said, dialing my mums number. I didn't look up at him as I spoke.
"No ill wait, I don't mind" He said, offering a small smile to me.
As I put the phone to my ear I smiled. This time she answered, "Hey Mum.. So there evacuating the school.. Because of something with the district... So um can you come pick me up?" I asked, I spoke quickly.
"Sweetie ..." she sighed. "I'm at work I can't until 1 o'clock." She explained to me through the phone.
"Well I have to leave the school now so... I guess ill go to the Frozen Yogurt place and wait for you?" I asked with a sigh.James looked at me nervously.
"Okay sweetie be careful..." My mum said.
"Wait" James said interrupting.
I looked up at him suddenly."You can stay with me until she comes... I mean at my house... My mum wont mind, I don't have anything else going on today." James explained.
I mouthed 'Thank You' and told my mum the plan. "I love you Mum" I said to her through the phone.
"Love you too honey" She said before hanging up.
"Oh my gosh James Your the best thank you!" I thanked him, "I'm so glad I dont have to spend a few hours in a frozen yogurt place!" I laughed."No problem" He smirked, giving a small chuckle.
We walked outside and watched the kids file on to the busses.
He looked at my earrings, "Do you only own Roses?" he asked chuckling.
"No... I just own a lot of roses" i said laughing a little too.
"Yeah, Pink, White, Purple, Blue, Black, Red-" He said until i cut him off."Ah ha! You messed up! I don't own a red pair!" I laughed.
"Are you serious?! Roses are normally red.. not Black!" He joked.
"Yeah BUT I don't own red" I said as i playfully shoved his upper arm.A few minutes later James's Mother drove up. "Hey Alex!" she smiled rolling down the window.
"Hi Karla" I smiled back.James walked over to the car and explained the situation i was in because my mum couldn't come to get me. "Oh not a problem, we can take her!" Karla said unlocking the car doors.
"Thank you so much!" i said with big smile.
"Of course!" she said.
James opened the back seat door for me and i got in the car. "thanks" I mumbled softly as he closed the door. He then opened the door in the front seat and got in sitting down. He looked over the chair at me and we talked on the way to his house. I had been to his house before but only with other kids for book club. As we arrived we got out of the car and walked into the house. We sat on the couch and talked laughing every two minutes. What seemed like a half a hour went by when i noticed it was getting dark.
"Wait... What time is it?!" i said jumping off the couch looking at the clock.
"Uh.." he started to say.
"Oh my gosh its almost 5:30!" I gasped in shock.
"Wait what?!" James said jumping off the couch too.
"My mum was supposed to be here four hours ago!" I exclaimed worried.
"Yeah... Where is she?" James mumbled softly.
I looked down "I hope she's okay..." I said quietly.
"hey I'm sure she's fine... She probably talking to a client" he said coming over to me.
"Yeah..." I said softly.
A while later Karla came walking into the living room. "I couldn't get a hold of her" she said. "... Your dad wouldn't answer either" She continued.
I sighed and James put his hand on my shoulder. "I'm sure there fine," James said trying to comfort me.
"I hope so" I said softly, shaking my head.
"Well with no response were not throwing you on the street. Hang out for a while longer and if it comes to it your welcome to take the couch," Karla said with a reassuring smile."Thank you very much, I really appreciate it... I have no idea what I would have done without you" I replied nodding to Karla.
She offered me a reassuring smile and then walked into the other room.
James was already sitting on the couch. I sighed and joined him. We then proceeded to start watching Netflix for awhile. After an hour or so the the show suddenly stopped. It started buffering and did this for a long while. But then, the lights went out. It was dark besides the light of the computer. I gasped slightly.
"What the" I muttered under my breath.
"What happened?" James said at the same time.
I looked on the computer and checked in settings... the wifi went out along with the power.
"That's weird" I asked standing up.
"Yeah" he replied, "MUM!!!" he yelled upstairs.
She came down stairs. "you both alright" She asked.
"Were fine," I answered quickly, "what happened? Did a circuit blow?" I asked her, furring my eyebrows.
"I don't kn-" Karla started but James cut her off.
He was already looking out the window, "The whole town is out!" He exclaimed looking at the dark town.
"uh oh" I whispered nervously.
Little did i know that "Uh Oh" was very much needed.
