I was jolted awake from my restless slumber by a harsh landing. I gasped and looked around, sweat trickling down my temple.
I remembered then just exactly where I was, and it took me everything not to choke on rising sobs. I wouldn't let my enemy see me in this state, and I certainly wouldn't let my unborn child get hurt.
My hands weren't tied together, thank god, so they immediately shot to my stomach in a gentle, but protective, embrace. My heart felt like it was racing at the speed of light, because I knew it was beating fast but I certainly couldn't feel it.
Everything hurt. From the lids of my eyes to the tips of my toes, sore and achy feelings jolted through me and made my entire being scream in protest. Don't move, don't move! It seemed to plead, but I ignored it.
I lifted my knee so it was bent and pushed backwards slowly. The sound of scraping followed my small movements under me told me that I was laying down on a dirt-floor. I glanced upwards and saw that the ceiling, which was a few feet taller than me should I be standing, were jagged uneven columns of rocks and stone. They didn't look like they would fall, which was a good thing for me.
Then the metal bars drilled into the columns caught my eye. Jail bars, they looked like, leaving no room for anyone to squeeze through.
I turned my eyes and saw the open door, with Livius standing in front of it. His hand was on the silver bars, not closing it but keeping himself placed in front of it.
"Thank you for cooperating with me," Livius finally said, his eyes watching as I slid myself against the wall, my knees protectively in front of my stomach. "You'll be safe here."
"Don't bullshit me," I ground out in reply, my teeth dragging together to contain my boiling rage. "Nothing about you is safe. Don't you even dare try to define safe-"
"Calm down," Livius said, his relaxed stance and mild eyes not leaving me as he held a hand up. My eyes narrowed at the interruption of my words, and I growled under my breath. "Being stressed isn't good for a pregnancy, you know."
That did it. Something snapped inside of me and the next thing I saw was a red mist taking over my vision. With an enraged yell, I darted to my feet and raced towards Livius. He knew it was coming, because the door slammed shut and he had stepped back. My front half rammed right into the closed door, my stomach taking most of the force.
