I run past the small hut, my legs screamed with indescribable pain, my lungs struggled to keep oxygen flowing through my worn out body. The little voice in the back of my head telling me to just give up, let the monster win this round. I try to shake the thoughts, but to no avail, the thoughts continued to haunt me, like they had been for the past sixteen years.I turn the corner and sprint to one of the smaller castles, my head spinning with thoughts of triumph as I unlocked the gate, pushing myself to survive at least one more day.
That's when the sharp pain pierced my skin, it was the sensitive place where my neck and shoulder met.
Everything began crumbling, everything began hurting, my neck, my back, my stomach, and every other body part that could possibly experience pain, they all lit up like fireworks on the Fourth Of July.
It was then that everything slowly faded to oblivion and beyond, the pain still rang out through my body, but it became dull, unimportant.
My limbs fell limp as I drifted off to wherever you go when you die.
Heaven? Hell? Purgatory? Or maybe just the ground...?
Wherever that is, I feel like I'm going there.
Then, my world went numb, the pain was gone and so was everything else.

I slowly opened my eyes to the dim light reflecting off the moon, my gums tingled with a new sensation, my neck still stung with a small, dull, nagging itch, but other than that, the pain was nonexistent. My eyes blinked a few times, adjusting to the light, and to the new clarity that made my vision over ten times better than then yesterday, that is... if everything happened yesterday. I'm not sure.
What day is it? I asked myself, although I knew that I didn't have the answer.
I could feel my pupils dilating as they took in the only source of light in the room, the moonlight. Which had me wondering, if my vision is better than before, then what else might have been improved by this accident?
I focused on my other four senses, or at least the three that I could test out at this time. I focused on my sense of smell, I took in a deep breath, the air was filled with things that I would have never been able to smell before, I could smell the cow meat roasting three miles away.
My mind started forming question.
Where did these improved abilities come from? And what price have I paid to be able to have these new.... updates, if you will?
I pushed those thoughts out of my mind, I didn't want to think of the sacrifice I had to pay to gain this power, not now at least, not until I find out how extreme my power is and where exectly it came from.
This time I focused on my hearing, I was amazed as I could hear the giggles and cheers of children from, what I assume, a near by village.
I smiled as I heard their fits of laughter, then, I could feel their very essence, their very beings, souls, if you must.
But I'd always thought that souls would feel light, pure, and heavenly, no, they were nothing like that, some were dark, some pure, and some just... dull....?
The dull ones, I assume, were the dead, the buried souls of the deceased.
I was impressed at the range of my new powers, whatever happened to me had enhanced my senses, though I liked it, the feeling I get when I hone in on each one is strange.
I heard a soft chuckle, it was from the doorway.
How could I have not sensed him before?
As though he had read my mind, he said, "I masked my essence with a spell, that's why you couldn't sense my presence."
I nodded, questions flooding my head as I stare up at the man.
"Who are you?" My mouth forming the words before I could even comprehend what I was saying.
His face lit up with a cocky smirk. "I am Sir Drafice, father and lord of the creatures of the night, such as yourself, my dear. Now, I'm sure you are filled with questions and worries that you would like to address. So at this time I shall let you ask. Go."
"What am I now?" I asked quietly.
"You, my precious, are a vampire. One of the creatures of the night." He answered immediately, as though he expected the question.
"What exactly does that mean? Am I going to be like this forever?" I question, the idea of staying a vial creature forever sent a pain through my heart.
He nodded. "I'm afraid so, and for that I am truly sorry. The vampire that turned you was not given consent to. But fear not, he shall be punished severely for forcing this upon you." He assured me, his voice was a concoction of rage and sympathy.
"Why would he be punished? What did he do wrong?" I cringed at the idea of someone being hurt because of me.
"Here in the realm of the night, it is a crime to take the blood of a human without consent. The man that bit and turned you, he did not have your consent, correct?" He asked.
I nodded and he continued. "The crime is punishable by torture and rarely.... death." The last word made me flinch.
A man was going to die.... because of me?
I tried not to think about it and changed the subject with another question. "So.... what does it mean to be a vampire? Are the superstitions correct? Will I have to take shelter each morning before the sun rises? If I shall be impaled by a stake, shall that take my life?" I asked, worry showing through my voice.
Sir Drafice shook his head, chuckling, as though all my words were silly riddles. "No, you need not take shelter when the sun takes the sky, nor will a stake kill you. Many of the superstitions are just made up, fed to the humans by the monsters, to create false hope. But some of the tales are somewhat true. Sunlight will not turn you to ash, but it will hurt, how much it hurts depends on how strong you are. If you are to be impaled, it shall sting, quiet a bit, but it shall not end your life. The rumors that vampires are allergic to garlic is anything but true. Vampires can turn into bats and much more, but that depends on the magical ability that the vampire possesses. Vampires do not live on the blood of humans alone, if they choose to, their appetite may be satisfied with the blood of an animal. And one last thing I must tell you, when you bite a human, it does not turn them into a vampire. A vampire must drain most of the human's blood before injecting it's blood and soon after it's venom, if a vampire drains a human and only shares the blood, the mortal shall not convert and will most likely die soon after from blood loss. The same goes for if the body is drained and only the venom is injected. It's a very long and complicated procedure." He explained and sent a reassuring smile my way.
"I know this is a lot to take in, but I would like you to know that even though I don't like the circumstances that brought you here, I really think that I will enjoy you being here. And don't worry, there is a manual that I have written out for the newborns, such as yourself. It explains the laws of the vampire kingdom and the powers you now possess and how to use or mask them in front of mortals. It tells you almost everything you need to know to start off, the rest you'll learn by yourself, from experience." He explained.
I force the corners of my lips upward in a tight, uneasy smile before nodding in understanding.
"Good, now if you can, I'd like it if you would follow me." He offered me his hand, I took it and he helped me find balance, my limbs ached with a strength that I had never known.
"Your body strength will have improved significantly, so please try to be careful. It might take a while for you to get used to this new body of your's." He warned with a soft chuckle.
I nodded, taking a few wobbling steps, with his aid of course.
The edges of my lips turn up in a smile as we make it past the door way.
Then I start to wonder, where is he taking me?
