Once upon a time there was a girl called Jessica. That's me! I was moving to a place called Morrinsville. I was afraid that I would need to leave my horse Glimmer at home with my best friend. Glimmer was black and white with smooth, small hooves. Luckily the house we brought had ten acres to graze Glimmer. I was so happy!
Our new house looked old, about twenty years old. I went to play in the paddock behind the house but there was something moving around in the bush. I ran back home and went to Dad and said "There is something hiding in the bush." He got his gun and went out into the paddock. As he entered the spooky, dark woods he found them, it was a whole pack of wolves. He had to be still or they would see him.
He got his gun ready and BANG! They all ran away. He crept into the bush further and found them again but they had split up suddenly and surrounded him. He got out his gun again and BANG! Again, they ran away. Dad quickly ran back home and told me that he had shot two wolves, I was amazed. "I thought that you would die from being attacked by a whole pack of wolves!" I said, relieved.
"But I didn't," he said, "I am never going back in there again, it is a danger zone." We continued to talk for a little while and then I went back out to my horse and brushed it.
A few weeks later there was a horse race and I entered the day after I heard about it. I went home after school and trained my horse each day. Mum reckoned we looked awesome and Glimmer was running faster and faster.
The next day it was the competition and I got to skip a day off school to compete. It was a long drive and we had to stop seven times but we finally got there. We got out of the car to spot heaps of other horses there, I couldn't even see where I was going, it was chaos!
Mum and I went and saddled up Glimmer and I lined up at the starting line. CRACK! The gun went. I was far behind the pack but I was slowly starting to catch up. I passed five of them and I was just behind the horse that was in the lead, we were side by side! I waited until I was near the finish line and I sped passed him. I WON!! I was amazed as I thought I couldn't do it, but I did.
Out came the cup. They gave the cup to me and it was as heavy as my saddle, which is pretty heavy. Glimmer was so tired I put her in the horse float and we went home felling proud.
