Chapter One

Lexus' POV

"Honey there are many more volunteering opportunities, I'm not quite sure I'm okay with this one." My mother looked at me with worried eyes. I could see why considering I had just told her I wanted to help out at the Prison that was less than 10 minutes away.

My father immediately took this opportunity to jutt in.

"Besides Lexus, do you really think those criminals want to learn how to paint." He muttered the words criminals and paint as if they were mere gum at the bottom of his shoes. However, I completely understood why considering my father was a priest at the local Christian church.

I let my hurt look disappear into one of determination and pursed my lips.

"Yes, dad, I do. Painting is not just something one can do for fun or out of boredom. It can help these people who you call criminals to center themselves and find peace at mind, maybe they'll even turn the leaf over." I uncrossed my arms and put my hands on my hips before continuing,"Point is, these people need someone who can help them and I need those community service hours if I want to stay ahead of everyone else at school. Nothing will happen. I promise I won't go looking for trouble."

I gave my parents a pleading look and they turned to each other before my mother spoke.

"Okay Lexus, we'll sign this off. But don't forget-"

I cut her off with a small smile and mocked her,"to be safe, yes mom, I will."

My parents signed the papers and I couldn't help the excitement within me. I would be doing something I loved while also helping out my community.

'Yay!' I thought as I was too excited and let out a huge grin.

My father held the paper out for me to take but before I could take it, he slipped it back and looked me in the eyes.

"Lexus, we are trusting you okay? Now just because you won't be looking for trouble does not mean trouble won't come and find you. Stay close to a police officer at all times, all rig-" I didn't let him finish before I attacked him with a hug and kissed his cheek muttering the words,"Yes, yes! Thanks dad"

I jumped off of him and went to hug my mother.

"Thank you! Thank you!" I grabbed the paper and made my way upstairs but not before turning and throwing them one last smile.

Once upstairs I decided to waste no time and call up my best friend.

*ring*

*ring*

"Lex!!!!!"

I held the phone away from my ear and chuckled at Allie's behavior.

"Oh my gosh, how'd it go with the rents? Did they say yes?" Her words were going a million miles per second but I caught them.

"It went good, they signed me off. I'm gonna go give the paper back, wanna come?" At my question, she snorted.

"And possibly get killed by an in? No thanks, I'll save that for you. But seriously Lex, watch out okay? Not all people are nice."

I rolled my eyes but understood what she meant.

"I know, I'll be extra careful." She laughed and said,"I'll pray for you!"

I scoffed.

"Riiiight because you pray.."

"Hey!"
