Usagi 98

'What's the use in saying no...'

"... We're all going to die anyway."

As Usagi stood next to Madara and Obito Uchiha, the shinobi out on the battlefield thought for sure that this meant the end.

One of their strongest fighters, the person they were depending on, had abandoned them. Usagi had abandoned hope, not caring about the outcome of anything.

"I'm glad you see things our way." Obito said as she stood beside him. "We can create a new world."

But Usagi didn't care about a new world, nor did she even spare him a glance. Whether it was this world or a new one, Neji wouldn't be in it.

All she wanted was him. How she craved his comforting embrace... she even found herself thinking back fondly about all the times he had scolded her or gotten angry at her...

It was the curse of having a photographic memory. Everything she had ever experienced was always fresh in her mind, that's why she just couldn't bring herself to do it in the end.

No matter how empty she felt, she couldn't do nothing. No matter how much she wanted to forget, she couldn't.

All Usagi had ever wanted was for everyone to be happy.

If she were to go along with the Eye of the Moon plan, sure, everyone would be happy, and she would be with Neji... but it wouldn't be real. It would be nothing but a mere illusion. 

She couldn't live in a dream, she had to face reality.

So while everyone else thought she was betraying the shinobi alliance, Usagi was actually plotting in her head.

Shikaku had died, placing his hopes in his final plan. Usagi would be damned if she let that plan go to waste.

She would make sure this all worked out, even if it was the last thing she did.

But that being said, she had to wait for an opening. 

It took a while, so much happening before she could even so much as let the shinobi forces that she hadn't betrayed them and that she was still going through with the plan. She had managed to let them know with one simple action.

A smile.

It had been none other than Kakashi who caught sight of her soft smile, catching onto its meaning within a second of seeing it. He hadn't ever doubted her, but having confirmation that she was still on their side was comforting to him.

Usagi was such a brave girl... to still be able to carry out such a bold and risky plan after having gone through the sorrow she had just experienced... and still having the ability to smile through it all...

Already she was a stronger ninja than Kakashi had ever been.

It wasn't as if doing this was easy for Usagi though. The aching she felt in her heart was almost unbearable, and she was far more mentally unstable in that moment than she let on. If it weren't for her desire to help her friends, there was no doubt she would have been the one responsible for ending the world.

A ninja is one who endures. So just for a little while longer, Usagi had to hold back her feelings. She had to endure this pain and protect everyone.
