Chapter one
Sophie sat on her bed, looking down at the pale, wooden floor beneath her dirty, shoeless feet. The sun shon weakly through the motheaten, frail curtains. It was about noon, she would think, although she couldn't be sure, because none of the clocks in the house worked properly, and the old wristwatch she had recieved for her 15th birthday, was tattered and broken. Sophie felt guilty about it being broken, because it was the best present her mother was ever able to give her. It had been her grandmothers. She still wore it none the less, just to show she still cared.
It was a Saturday, she could be sure of that, because yesterday was she was at school, and today she wasn't. She was glad to be away from school, not because she didn't like her lessons, infact, she did like her lesons, especially english. She liked to write poetry, she felt she could express herself this way, but with out really having to show anyone. No, she did not like school, because of the other teenagers. She just didn't understand them, the way they talked and laughed and joked around. Above all, they didn't understand her, sitting in a corner, all by herself, reading a book, or writing poetry. They walked past and spat at her, "Loner!", they jeered. She did not understand they had called her loner. She looked it up in her dictionary. Loner: noun; a person who prefers not to assosiate with others. Sophie thought, well that would be right, but what she didn't understand was why they had said it like it was an insult. Was it a bad thing to not be involved with other people? Did that mean there was something wrong with her? She had thought about other things they had called her, "loser" and "retard". She thought about the latter, and once again looked it up. Retard; a mentally handicapped person. She definately wasn't that. She did well in all her subjects, and her reports were allways good. It was just one of the many things she didn't understand about the other kids. But today, she wouldn't have to worry about them. She could focus on the things she liked, not having to be what they thought she should be.
Sophie tip toed down to the kitchen to find something to eat. She opened the little icebox under the cupboard, hoping to find something there. She found some bread, although it was a litle stale, it didn't bother her, she ate it gladly. Sophie went back up to her room and got her scratchy old jumper out of her tiny closet. She went into her mothers room. She was reading a book.
"Mum, im just going to go down to the creek, ok?" she said quietly
"Sure honey, be back by 6.00 ok? love you"
"you too mum, bye"
Sophie, went out the door and trudged throught the thick grass which supposedly used to be a garden. The sun was hiding behind thick clouds, threataning to downpour. She hurried along, until she got to the little burbling creek. Sophie liked to come down here, to be alone. It often inspired her when she could think of nothing to write about. She sat by the edge, diping her toes in thes water. The creek seemed to haved rised alot over the last week. It swired dangerously, churning and tossing.
Raindrops started falling. Sophie didn't mind, but then it started bucketing down, the water getting more aggresive. Sophie stood up, when all of a sudden, a shiver went down her spine. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, she knew she was not alone anymore. She slowly started to turn to see who it was, but before she could, two firm hands shoved aginst her back, she screamed as she toppled into the creek. The angry water pulled her down, tumbling and tossing her about, like she was in a washing machine. She thrashed againts the waves, but she was too weak. She could no longer see, because everything was shrouded in a swirl of mud. Sophie tried to surface for air but she just gulped down muddy water. Down she went, down, down, until she could hold on no longer. Everything went black...
