A scream echoed through the forest. Whatever wildlife remained in the area scattered at the ear shattering sound. A girl sat up quickly, her hand reaching for her machine gun as her ragged breathing broke the sudden silence around her. She glanced around quickly, looking for any sign of her friend.
There was no one in sight.
"Daehyun!" she hissed, the fear evident in her tone. A crack echoed through the trees to her left and she turned quickly, aiming her gun towards the sound. "Daehyun?" she whimpered uncertainly.
A low growl reverberated from the foliage and her heartbeat quickened. A malicious roar was released and something launched itself at her. There was a gunshot and the creature fell to the ground, the life taken from it. The girl trembled, tears forming at the corners of her eyes as she turned and looked up at her savior.
"Daehyun, you're alive," she sighed with relief, accepting his hand as he helped her to her feet. "Where were you?"
Daehyun was silent and avoided her gaze. His pale skin glistened under a thin layer of sweat as he gripped her hand and pulled her after him through the seemingly endless forest. His dark brown hair was knotted and caked with bits of dirt. She swept the muck from his head and brushed off his strong shoulders. His face was dirty and his clothes were torn and covered in dried blood and mud.
"Daehyun, where are we going?" the girl demanded, halting and refusing to walk any further.
"Min, we have to leave this country," he told her stubbornly. "We both know that the Americas and Australia are the only safe places left in the world- this world."
"Why now though? There's no way that we can make it to the airport. Not alone at least," she pointed out as footsteps sounded. The two of them quickly turned and pressed their backs together, their guns held up.
"Don't shoot!" a voice shouted at them. Slowly, a boy revealed himself, creeping out of the woods, his hands held up above his head and his rifle slug around his neck.
The two of them put their weapons down with sighs of relief. "Junhong, thank goodness!" Daehyun said happily, hugging the boy against his chest. Zelo shook out his blonde hair and smiled. "I thought you were dead!"
"I would have been!" he admitted, trudging after us as we marched though the endless trees. "Thank god I had Youngjae with me! I would have died if it wasn't for him."
Min cocked her head to one side and then quietly asked him, "Where is Youngjae?"
Junhong fell silent and turned his gaze to the ground. Grunting echoed through the thick trees, sending birds scattering in fear. There was a loud gunshot and the three of them jumped in shock. "There's Himchan," Zelo mumbled. "Himchan, we're on your three!" There were cracking sounds and Himchan stumbled out of the bushes.
"Can I please bathe? I'm covered in dirt and blood! It's disgusting!" he complained causing the others to roll their eyes.
Daehyun stared at him and then drawled, "Because bathing worked out so well the last time. That was the whole reason that we all got separated! I don't even know if Youngjae, Yongguk, and Jongup are even alive!"
"I am very much alive." The four friends whirled around in shock and stared at Jongup. Min grimaced when she noticed the head in his hand. He tossed it roughly to the ground at their feet and grumbled, "I don't think I can say the same for that thing though."
"Two more to go..." Daehyun murmured under his breath, cracking his neck and bending down to examine the head. "This is seriously unfair. Why were we the ones commissioned for this?"
