I am 21 years old. I've never been on my own. I've always had my parents support or friend's. I'm just your average 21 year old sorority girl from Hudson attending NYU. But starting tomorrow, I'll be leaving that all behind for an internship to the chief executive of Tyme Industries in Manhattan. This past week I placed a lease on a loft 10 minutes away from the office. I wouldn't have imagined in a thousand years I'd have this type of internship, probably more of a medical internship which is my major here. Who would've known I, Angelene Greene, would be in an office- on my own. I guess change is good for the soul.
"Hey! If you don't hurry up you're going to miss the movers in an hour!" Rosemary yelled from the doorway scanning the multiple unpacked boxes. I gave her a sad smile and grabbed my things to resume packing.
"Now come on," she said kneeling down in front on my box, "No sad smiles here! We'll still see each other. We're not that far!" she giggled. Rosemary was the optimistic kind, she was my first and only childhood friend. Rosemary was your common white ginger with freckles. She was 50% Peruvian and 50% Caucasian. She was never mean enough to be mad at you long enough than 10 minutes.
"Wheres Adeline?" I asked.
My question was followed by foot steps treading up the staircase then to my room.
"Did I hear my name?" she smirked at us standing in the doorway then sitting down next to Rosemary. Adeline and Rosemary were the exact opposite of me. She was blonde, very skinny, and well white. I was Colombian and Irish on my mothers side and Venezuelan on my fathers. I was light but not pale, I had stick straight light brown hair, skinny but not sick. I had my mothers green eyes and my fathers bushy eyebrows. I didn't look white or hispanic, somewhere in between, I liked it.
--The night of the move--
We decided our last dinner together in Alpha Kappa Gamma would be homemade stir-fry made by me.
"I'm really going to miss your cooking," Adeline whined.
I grinned, "It's only for the summer."
"Are you excited?!" Rosemary asked propping her leg up against the table.
I stood silent for a few seconds before answering.
"Yeah, I think I am."
"You think?" she asked.
"Well I mean who knows! My boss could be a huge dick!" who knew
"I get you" she replied solemnly.
I looked at her and smiled.
"C'mon, let's go!" I yelled getting up from the table. "We better hurry before we catch night traffic to Manhattan."
In the car ride to my loft was filled with blasting music and having a great time. The 30 minutes flew by like seconds, I was officially in Manhattan in front on my loft. We got out the car and each grabbed a box to lug up to my quarters. The lobby was beautiful, two waterfalls on each end and demur lighting. We went up the elevator and entered. My naked loft had only but a bed, my dressers, and a refrigerator my dad helped me carry up. My dad helped me move the majority of it, my mother wasn't 100% in my life since I was 7 but I saw her frequently.
Adeline and Rosemary helped me carry up all my boxes and managed to empty three boxes labeled KITCHEN, BATHROOM, and MISCELLANEOUS which was basically a bunch of crap I couldn't bare to part with. Before they left we looked out my window together that overlooked a billboard and some New York buildings.
"This is it" Rosemary said to break the silence.
I turned to face them both, "I guess it is, at least for now."
I walked them out to their car and said goodbye. I stood there for about 3 minutes before I realized I was standing on the sidewalk in Nike shorts and my sorority tee. I turned around slowly and walked back into the building up to my loft. Starting tomorrow, my life would change.
