Chapter 2

I was sitting in trig waiting for the final bell while biting the end of my pencil and trying to concentrate on what ever Mr.Andrews was blabbing on about the quadratic equation. I couldn't concentrate because I was so excited about this 'Senior Party' Lucy had invited me to. I mean technically it was one of the first real parties I've been to in my entire high school career. I took this into consideration and thought about how horribly sad that was. I mean out of all the 4 years I've spent at this place not once did I attend a party? Talk about no social life...

At last the final bell had rung and I was free from this institution of torture they call school.

I was gathering up my things when Mr. Andrews called me up to his desk before I left the room

"Yes Mr.Andrews?" I said politely

"Yes hello Amber before you go I would just like to inform you that you're one of the people have we have chosen for the top percent of trigonometry this year for the senior class."

I was so overwhelmed with joy I blurted out

"Really? Me? Amber Benson? Part of the top percent of the trigonometry at Maple Leaf High? Are you serious?!?"

"Yes Miss Benson I am quite serious," he said with a laugh

"We will be having a practice graduation ceremony on Tuesday, one month and 2 weeks before final graduation. We also would like to ask you to present a speech at the graduation as you are one of the Valedictorians,"

"Wait. I'm one of the valedictorians?" I said in utter shock.

"Um yes you are. You didn't get your letter in the mail yesterday?"

"No Sir, but I'll check with my mom about it but oh my gosh. IM A VALEDICTORIAN I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!"

"Yes Congratulations Miss Benson. I hope to see you at the practice ceremony on Tuesday after school"

"Yes sir! You can count on me being there!" I said still in disbelief on this wonderful news

"Oh and don't forget about that speech I told you about. I know it will make a big impact on this class."

"Yes sir! I'll have it ready soon! Thank you!"

"No problem. Have a nice weekend Amber!" He replied back

"You too Mr.Andrews!" I said and exited his classroom

Wow. This all happened so fast. After all these years and all my hard work I put in during high school I finally got what I wanted. The top percent of my class AND Valedictorian. This was a perfect day and I couldn't wait to celebrate with the Senior Party. Coincidently just as I started thinking about the party, I got a text message from Lucy. It read : Forgot I had detention today :/ Can you wait in the library until it's over @ 3:00?

Me: Sure. I have some extra work i need to do anyways. What time does the party start?

Lucy: It starts at seven so that gives us plenty of time to do make up, hair, dress up etc. I'll meet you in the fromt of library when I get out.

Me: Sounds good. See you then.

I made my way across campus to the library and Took out my biology and physics textbooks And placed them on a table near the computer lab In case I had to go to the Internet for research.

I was studying for a good 45 minutes or so when someone took the seat next to me. I looked up from my books and saw that it was Drew Adams.

Oh.

I didn't really like Drew but I didn't hate him. He was just one of the many jocks at school who- well, who was just there. Long story short He is basically a background character in my life.

"Hey. It's Amber; right?" He asked me

"Yup...that's my name..." I trailed off like it was the most obvious thing in the world

"So what are you doing, Amber?" He asked with Emphasis on my name

"Ummm... just studying while I wait for my friend to get out of detention."

I said as I gestured to my textbooks and piles of papers

" Who are you waiting for?"

"Lucy." I stated

"Lucy who?" He questioned

"Lucy Jenson."

"Oh that Lucy.....well that's cool" He trailed off leaving a Severely awkward silence in the air

I couldn't take it anymore so I broke the silence with what was running through my mind this entire conversation

"Why are you talking to me? I mean not like in a rude way or anything but in all these four years of high school we've never really talked before."

"Remember in 10th grade that one time we had to dissect a frog for bio and you were in my group with Jake and Sarah?"

"Oh yeah......but I mean like out of class like as friends." I said clarifying myself

"Well let me just answer your question. I'm talking to you right now because I wanted to know if you're going to the senior party tonight."

What. Why would Drew Adams ask me something like this out of all these years I've known him on this particular day?

"I don't understand. Why today, the day of the senior party, would you talk to me just to find that out? I'm so confused I hardly know you."

He let out a sigh that had a slight hint of annoyance and said

"Can you just tell me if you're gonna be there tonight or not?"

"Yes I'm gonna be there tonight but-"

He cut me off and said with a smile

"Ok great. See you there." and got up and left the library

What.

What.

W H A T.

I was so confused about that encounter with Drew that I couldn't concentrate on my work so I packed up all my stuff and waited outside the library for Lucy.

I saw her walking towards me and I met her half way.

"How was detention?" I asked playfully

"Dreadful as usual. What did you do in the library for an hour and a half?"

I questioned if I should tell her about the random conversation with Drew and how I was dumbfounded by if but decided it wasn't that important so I said

"Oh I just studied for finals." I said with a wink and we both started cracking up.

We exited the front doors of the school as Lucy said

"Let's get ready for this party." and we made out way to her car ready to prepare ourselves for a amazing night.
