"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?" said my mother as I threw away the trash as it was half full.
"I'm just taking it out, what's wrong?" I said as I saw her glaring face that she does whenever she's annoyed with my behavior.
"It's Thursday, you don't take the trash out on a Thursday. It's a sign of bad luck." She was always the "believer" type.
"I told you I don't believe in luck."
"Well, I do, ever since that truck ran over that man months ago I can't help but think it might happen to you to."
"I'll be fine, Mom."
Yes, it was Thursday, but I still don't understand the conspiracy. The death of that man happened on a Wednesday. Some say he was alive still in the hospital and died on Thursday, but I doubt anyone could survive a straight hit from a truck . That makes me wonder whatever happened to the driver, nobody talks about him.
"Dangit, Sam, I told you not to touch the fireplace ever!" Sam is my little brother he's only 4 and he just loves to do the opposite of what he's told, unless you scare him.
"Go away, poop face." I'm not sure why he calls me that, it just stuck whenever he learned the word "poop".
I picked him up and put him in his room with his toys so he can be distracted for a while. I knew my chores would be ten times harder if he's just running around the house. My mom turned on the news when she was sure Sam wouldn't be there to see it; news these days are too intense for him.
We've received reports of a bank robbery in Marge Street. The police are currently proceeding protocol.
Doesn't seem like anything is getting better. Out there everything is way more dangerous than you think. I remember the days when I was just a kid and people would find out to make new things for everyone. It was like Christmas everyday. Now everyone's trying to get their own way in this world, like everybody is a lone wolf, only looking out for themselves.
Knock
Just one knock and I knew exactly who it was. I quickly went to the door and opened it.
"Hey, dude, how's it going?" said Patrick. Most just call him Pat. He is one of the only people in this world that actually tries to support his family and friends. He usually comes to my house to hang out.
"I'm alright, just a little bit tired but okay for now. How's Emily?" Emily is his sister, she's fifteen years old like me. She fell off her bike a few days ago and twisted her leg.
"She's okay, happier than usual now that she has enough time to write down that story she's been writing for the past few weeks."
"Well I'm glad she's okay."
She was in my class, I remember when she tried to convince me not to drop out, since school was one of the only things that could help you forge your future these days.
We talked for a few minutes then Sam asked me to make some popcorn, so I did and we decided to watch a movie. I made sure to watch one of the old movies because those are the best in my opinion. We had a lot of fun, which is strange since we never experience that these days. Patrick was messing with Sam and Sam threw some popcorn at him, I ended up laughing at both of them until they both threw popcorn at me. I was picking up the popcorn from the floor when I realized what happened. The movie was interrupted and the same man from the news we saw earlier appeared and was actually yelling out the news as fast as possible.
ALERT, please remain calm, citizens. We've received more reports that the bank has been bombed completely. Stay away from the streets at all costs. We're contacting... officials around... again please remain...
The TV was cutting off and I decided to turn it off since Sam was getting scared. I held him close saying that was too far away for them to get us. He tends to get paranoid a lot, he probably gets it from Mom.
Then suddenly I hear the loudest explosion of my life, that hurts my ears for the first few minutes. The entire ground shakes knocking me to the floor, so do Sam and Patrick. It takes me a while to know just what happened. Then I look out my window.
The house next door to us was bombed.
