My Moment
Prologue
"Hi, my name is Summer Marito, and I'm a dancer."
This is what I said when I got to the front of a long line of people on the set of the first season of a new dance show called Dance With Me. I really didn't know what else they could possibly want to know. That I had Leukemia? That I refused to go on chemotherapy? That my parents would barely even let me out of the house? Well, I wasn't ready to tell them this. They would either reject me for the show, or pity me and say yes.
All my life, I've wanted to dance. My brother Stephen used to share this dream with me. But he gave it up, along with all his other hopes and dreams when Mom died. Our step mom, Magaret, likes to act as if she's our real mom. Of course, that's how step parents are though, right? They just don't get that no one can replace them. Margaret is completely mean, and she gets away with everything because dad 'loves' her so much. If that's love, I don't want it. My real mom died when I was 7. I was hurt and devestated. It wasn't a normal car crash or something like that, no, my mom was murdered. I watched her die. I came home, and she was laying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor. I watched her take her last breaths. The only thing left there was a bloody white rose.
Our whole family fell apart after that; Stephen stopped eating, Dad stopped socializing with everyone, and me, well, I built up a wall that until I turned 15 stayed firm and standing. That was when the doctors took me in and told me I was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was only last week that this happened.
"Honey, are you sure you're feeling good?" My dad asked for the fifth time that day. "We can reschedule our plans. We don't have to go out. Margaret won't mind, will you honey?"
Margaret glared at me, angry that I had ruined her and dad's plans. Really, it wasn't my fault. I wasn't upset that they had forgotten it was my birthday today. So she shouldn't be upset about this. She can reschedule. You can't reschedule your birthday.
"Sweetie, I'm sure she's fine." Margaret said in her nasally voice, with a glare thrown my way.
I suddenly felt sick and bolted to the bathroom. I felt someone come in and hold my hair up out of the way. Stephen. He was my rock. The only reason I didn't hate this family; because he was in it. Well, if you could call this a family.
I brushed my teeth slowly and smiled gratefully at him. He gave me a smile back.
"That's it sweetie," I heard my dad say. "I'm taking you to the hospital, come on." He pulled my arm. I began to feel sick and light headed.
The last thing I heard was "Are you al-" before I fainted.
I woke up hours later, not knowing where I was. I guess it was pretty normal for me to be going to the hospital. I'd been feeling sick for a while now, and dad was a total spaz when it came to health. He'll take you in if you just have a cold or you're one degree above the average 98.6. He said he'd rather be safe then sorry.
I heard someone beside me breath a sigh of relief. They gripped my hand. It was my father. I turned to look at him. "Oh, thank God you're awake!" he exclaimed.
