Prologue:

Blood. The crimson red liquid that would course through my body was now running down my legs through cuts in my skin. I bit down on my lips, so hard it hurt. I couldn’t let the pain slow me down; I had to keep running. Who knows what else they could have done to me? Who knows what else they were capable of?

I was only popping out for some quick shopping for dinner. I would never have anticipated this to happen to me. Muggings felt like they only happened on TV and never in real life. Especially in Falloway; it was the quietist safest part of the countryside. How much can a town change from peaceful to terrifying in the space of two years?! I had lived here through my childhood, out of harms reach and now I’ve moved back, I am suddenly in danger?

Running as fast as I possibly could, I raced through the deserted streets. I had no idea where I wanted to go or where I could go; fear seemed to block out everything I had learned about around here but I couldn’t stop, I just couldn’t! Even with my battered leg I kept going until I reached a corner. I looked back to see if the thugs were still chasing me. There was nobody there. With my eyes focused behind me, I didn’t see the big form standing in the middle of the pavement until a second before we collided.

I stifled a scream as I fell backwards onto the cold pavement after I hit the rock hard build of the figure.

The person who I bumped into seized me from the ground quickly and snaked an arm around me. I wanted to cry out for help but a hand clamped over my mouth. “Shh…don’t make a sound,” the stranger, who I had guessed was a man, whispered to me. It was hard to do so since he was slowly backing me into a narrow alley. I kicked and thrashed to break his grip but he was far too strong for me. All of a sudden, I heard the familiar voices of my attackers in the distance, growing louder and louder. It sent my heart on a beating frenzy. “I think she ran this way,” I froze. Staying silent, I watched the thugs pass the alley where we were hiding in their large group, but one of them hesitated continuing. He wore a black hoodie that shadowed most of his face; the only thing visible was his chin that had a small black scar on it. After looking around, he followed the rest of his gang. My heart rate began to slow in relief and the strangers grip over my mouth and body relaxed. I sighed at the release. This man had…saved me?

I turned to my rescuer and saw he was standing in the shadows still, face down low. “You’ve saved me,” I said aloud. Gratitude saturated my voice.

The man lifted his face, “You shouldn’t be out here at night alone and unprotected,” he said, ignoring my statement. He sounded sharp-as if he were ready to say that for ages.

“I-I-I didn’t know it was dangerous, I was just out shopping. Last time I was here I would still play out at this time if I wanted to and it was perfectly fine,” I explained.

“Well, you must have been away a long time cause’ this place isn’t so safe anymore,” he replied, starting towards the opening of the alley. “Come with me.”

“I have to get home, my nanna is probably worried sick,”

“Then call her,” It would have been simple…if those thugs hadn’t taken my bag and my phone. When I made no move he threw his head back. He took my arm and hauled me out of the alley which didn’t go down well with me battered leg. I was scared to ever leave the silent wall confines of that alley but I had no choice. We darted across the dimly lit road and stopped outside of a sleek silver car.

“Where are you t-taking me?” I don’t go with strangers, ever. This might be just as bad as those gangsters. He could be one of them for all I knew! I know nothing about this person, or had anything to do with him and he was insisting I go with him. He saved me; I’ll give him that but still.

“My work place, you’ll be safe there,”

The man quickly walked around his car and into the drivers seat and I hesitated. This might be the biggest mistake tonight. If the streets are now suddenly dangerous here, than how can I be sure the people on it aren’t?

The man saw my uncertainty and sighed. He rummaged through the glove compartment and pulled out what looked like a tiny shield. He showed it to me. Police badge. “Now will you come with me?”

I nodded once and got into the car. Pain seared through my body when I had to bend my injured leg but I bit my lip and took it. The engine revved and we began driving down the deserted streets of Falloway. Now that I thought about it, the shop was near enough empty with no customers and workers. Why didn’t I think something was up? When I used to play with my friends loads of people were out late-the night was a relaxing time. We didn’t speak in the car, the silence in and outside was eerie. There was no real escape if need be for me; the doors were locked and I wasn’t getting out fast with my leg. The throbbing was becoming unbearable. After rolling the window down and allowing the cold breeze to hit my face, I leaned back and-without warning-I passed out.
