Chapter 14
Everything has to end eventually, even perfect moments like the one Aaron and I had just had, just sitting there, watching the sunrise, together.
But when the windows started opening, and people started waking up and walking around, Aaron and I both knew that it was time for us to head back to our rooms.
“I wish life could be so simple,” I confessed to Aaron, burying my head into his chest.
“I know babe,” he said, stroking my hair, “So do I.”
After a couple more minutes, we said goodbye and parted ways – at least for the time being.
As I walked back to my room, I was hoping that Laurane was still asleep. I didn’t want to have to come up with an excuse for where I had been, and why I wasn’t in the room all morning.
Of course, as usual, I had no such luck.
When I opened the door and walked inside, Laurane was sitting on the edge of her bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
“Hey,” she said as she yawned, “I didn’t expect you to be out so early. Where did you go?”
I just shrugged and said, “I just went out for a walk. I couldn’t sleep, and I decided to get some fresh air.”
Laurane nodded, not even questioning my little white lie.
I reasoned with myself, thinking that technically I wasn’t lying. I had gone out for a walk because I couldn’t sleep…I just hadn’t told Laurane all of the details. I was pretty sure that she wouldn’t want to hear them, anyways.
Laurane got completely out of bed and got into the shower, which gave me a few minutes to collect myself.
By the time Laurane got out, I was calm and casual, ready to face the day – after I had a shower.
I hopped in the shower and just stood there for a while, dozing off for a good 10 minutes – God knew that I needed to do it, after getting barely any sleep the night before.
Once I finally got out and got dressed, Laurane was already ready to go and waiting for me.
“Come on,” she urged me, even though she knew that it wouldn’t do anyone any good, “Class is starting really soon.”
I just waved her off and set to work on making myself look beautiful.
20 minutes later, Laurane and I both walked to class looking better then we had in a while.
My hair was straight and teased, and I was in a light pink cropped t-shirt and white shorts.
Laurane was wearing faded blue boot-cut jeans, pink cowgirl boots, and her hair was in a messy French braid.
It was odd – Laurane and I both had total different styles, opinions, and even tastes in guys, but we were still best friends, and we always would be…I hoped.

The day went by in an uneventful way, with not even any detentions or anything.
After classes were all done with for the day, I sat down on a bench outside and drank a bottled water, thinking.
Spring break was almost here. There was only one more week. I was going to be spending it at Laurane – and Aaron’s – parent’s house.
We went every year, and it was always a blast.
As I was thinking about this, I also realized that in a week, if Aaron and I decided to her, that Laurane would know about what we had been doing.
That thought unsettled me, and I quickly pushed it out of my mind, saving it for another time.
Laurane had some student council club thing going on today, so I was on my own until later tonight.
I was planning on just hanging out by myself in our room, watching movies and - attempting – to do some homework.
My plans completely changed, though, when I got a text from Aaron that said, “Date tonight? I’m craving ice cream from that new ice cream store that they put on campus.”
The text made me grin, and I quickly texted back with a, “Hell yes! Meet me there in an hour.”
We confirmed the plans, and I became really glad that I wasn’t spending my evening all alone after all, and that instead I was going to get to go on a date with Aaron!
I sent Laurane a text saying that I had another dated with ‘Max’, and that I was going to be busy later.
Laurane texted back telling me good luck, and that she wasn’t going to be back to our room until later tonight either.
I got off of my bench, threw my now empty water bottle into a nearby trashcan, and walked towards my room, needing to get ready for my date with Aaron.
