Sometimes Maddie forgot her parents were normal people with hopes and dreams just like she had. So when her Dads phone rang half way through dinner one Wednesday evening the last thing she expected was for him to answer it. "Excuse me" Andrew Turner muttered, pushing back his seat and speed walking to where his phone sat on the main bench in the Turners kitchen. He answered it on the third ring and spoke in a hushed voice. His daughters Maddie and Carly looked at each other dumbfounded, then back at their Mum Elizabeth Turner who continued to eat her steaming Butter Chicken as if she didnt have a care in the world. "Whats that all about?" Carly inquired, receiving a shrug from her mother and a raised eyebrow her sister. Normally by now Elizabeth would be scolding her husband for being so rude. Phones were a big no no at the dinner table in the Turner house hold. Dinner time was an important time in their house. The 4 Turners all led busy lives and the half an hour they spent sharing a meal together every night was almost sacred. It was the time that they caught up with each other, learnt what was going in each others lives and enjoyed a nice meal together. It was where Andrew 'Drew' and his wife Elizabeth 'Lizzy' made sure their daughters were keeping up at school, were doing well in sport and prompted them on their table manners. "Elbows in" ,"Hold your knife and fork properly!" Where common remarks at the Turner dinner table and it drove the girls up the wall but they knew their parents had their best interests at heart and didnt want them to end up bad mannered, uneducated girls. Drew walked back into the dining room quarter of an hour later with a grin that reached both ears. "Girls why don't you two do the dishes while your mother and i catch up." He beamed. The girls nodded they did the dishes every night so his prompt was nothing new, the grin however was. They got to work quickly, wanting to get the dishes done as soon as possible. "That phone call was a bit weird." Maddie started. Her bitch of a sister Carly pulled a face. "It seems serious,I'm gonna keep outta lt."She said sounding bored as she started putting the dirty dishes into the CLEAN DISHWASHER! This annoyed Maddie a lot. Carly was a lazy one,she hardly ever did much more than sit on the couch watching tv. Where as Maddie liked to be productive whether that be doing homework, playing sport or stalking her bae on Instagram. Maddie also got annoyed by how her parents could see the manipulative little shit being a manipulative little shit! Maddie sighed trying to decide whether or not to have a go at Carly and risk getting into trouble or just tell her to fuck off and finish the dishes herself. "Carly just leave!" Maddie snapped. "You always do this! You're going to do the dishes and then mum and dad are going to come back and it'll look like I've just been lazy and gone away! YOURE JUST TRYING TO MAKE ME LOOK BAD!" She screamed at her big sister. Maddie was taken aback. "I'm not trying to make you look bad, but it's not hard when you put dirty dishes into the CLEAN DISHWASHER!" Maddie said making gestures towards the dishwasher. "Fucking hell Carly get a grip!" She muttered half hoping she wouldn't hear. Carly stomped her feet like the spoilt shit she is and walked away walking into dad as she went. "Girls! What on EARTH is going on here?" He asked, smile gone and replaced with a scowl. Maddie felt kinda bad but then saw Carly smirking like it was all Maddie's and returned to being angry. "Well?" He repeated. "It was her fault" they both started at the same time then gave each other a glare. 'How dare that bitch' Maddie thought. Their dad wasn't happy. "You two need to start acting your age and get along!Finish the dishes without a fuss or there'll be consequences!" They both sighed, just wantin to get the dishes over and done with. Maddie started emptying the dishwasher while Carly cleared the table.  It was probably going to be her only contribution to the dishes so Maddie just left her be. Once the dishwasher was empty Maddie scraped all the plates Carly had stacked rather untidily next to sink and put them in the dishwasher. And then washed the stupid non dish washable ones by hand. She then dried them and put them away while Carly carelessly wiped down the table. After deciding that she thought she had done enough and that Carly (in a perfect world) would finish the rest Maddie took a seat on the couch and started watching that evenings shortland street.  At around nine pm Maddie decided it was time to hit the hay, grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen then wished her parents goodnight. Maddie found it odd that they didn't go and join her in the family room instead choosing to sit in the lounge with the doors shut. Maddie decided that it probably ha something to do with dad's phone call but couldn't help standing idly on the stairs and just listening into their conversation for a bit. "It's an amazing offer Drew." She heard her mum say. "Once in a lifetime Lizzy."  Her dad said smugly. But Maddie couldn't be bothered hearing the rest. She continued on her way to her room with a quick pit stop to the bathroom so she could brush her hair, teeth and wash her face. By quarter past nine she was snuggled up in bed reflecting on the day and planning the next. Tomorrow afternoon she had an extended netball training in preparation for their first game of the season. Maddie and Carly were both in their schools top team or the 'Tauranga Grammar Senior A Netball Team'. And we're avid supporters of their provincial netball team. 'The Waikato Bay Of Plenty Magic' Their first game of the season was particularly important as there are selectors coming to watch, trying to find players to play in their under 15,16 and 17 teams. The under 18 team had already been selected but nobody from Maddie and Carly's school had been selected. And with that Maddie fell asleep dreaming about nothing but netball.
