Chapter 12

Conscious POV

“Conscious!” A voice yelled, breaking through the darkness and silence in my mind.

No. I didn’t want to think. No, no, no. I lifted my hands to my ears, trying to block out the sound. I didn’t want to think about him anymore. I just wanted death. I jumped a little when two cold arms wrapped around me, and pulled me into a tight hug. “Why, why, why?!” I asked in a quiet voice, sobbing into his hoodie, clutching the fabric like it was a lifeline.

“Conscious…” Jack cooed, his voice soothing. “I’m sorry…”

“Sorry for what?” I asked, wrapping my arms around his torso as well. “You didn’t do anything wrong. I was wrong to abandon you and the others, and join Pitch! You…and the others…didn’t do anything worng.”

“Shhh, it’s alright.” He spoke soothingly again. “And you are wrong there.  I was wrong to believe in Pitch. I should have known that you’d never would have done that thing to the extent Pitch spoke of. I’m the one who should be sorry. I almost killed you. And…”

He looked towards the ground, ever closing the gap between death-on-impact and us.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you die.” He told me, using his powers to slow our fall.

“But why? I will die soon anyways. I’m fading, I’m going to die very soon. Might as well die now, since it is so close, I might even die tomorrow.” I exclaimed sadly, my sadness reflected in Jack’s blue eyes.

“Because no one has ever believed in you?” He asked, his tone implying he already knew the answer. By this time we were hovering in the air, gliding ever so slowly down to the ground. “Then we will just have to find someone who will believe.”

He smiled charmingly, and landed softly on the ground. “And who is this child we will be visiting?” I asked curiously.

I smiled; maybe there was some things still to be curious about still left in the world. Like who would believe me, and that Jack decided to believe my truths again.

“His name is Jamie. He was the first one to believe in me, so why can’t he be the first for you? He believes in all the guardians, and seen them all…except you. Why don’t you go show off? So, shall we be off, Conscious?” He asked, offering me a hand.

With a gracious smile, I took his offered hand. “I think we shall be off. Let’s visit Jamie. Maybe I can actually help the Guardians then.” I said, smiling brightly, winking a little at Jack.

“Of course you can help us Conscious! Your Manny’s sister, aren’t you?” He asked jokingly. “Oh, and Pitch said you were twins. Am I correct in thinking this, or did Pitch feed us all another lie?”

“Oh, no. This one is true.” I responded quietly. “When we were brought to the Guardian world, Pitch had two choices; To choose the evil side, which he did, or to be the Guardian like us, by instilling fear in children before they do something stupid, to protect them. To keep them from doing something dangerous. I instill curiosity, while he should be the guardian of protection, but when he first awoke, when he saw me and Manny, he was jealous of our looks, and was fearful that people wouldn’t accept him because he had ashy skin, and looked evil. The truth is, he should be with us, protecting children, like we do every day.”

“Wow…I…That’s interesting. How do you know that?” Jack asked, squishing his eyebrows together.

I giggled a little, stepping out of the hug that we subconsciously continued since landing. “I’m his twin sister, and even if he was the utmost evil person alive, he’s still my brother, and I still love him like I love my older brother.”
