The trouble started when their father came home.
At first everything seemed perfectly fine. Dad came home after he had finished filming. He came into the house with his bright smile and loud voice so filled with life.
Selene jumped from her spot on the floor and ran up the grown man. He picked her up and spun her around, much to the six year olds delight.
Her ten year old brother, had paused his game and came up to his father. Happy to have him back. "Dad!" He embraced his father around the waist. Then felt a large hand pat his head.
"There's my boy. Where's your mom?"
"Mommy is in her study." Selene said. Dad put her down and put a finger to his lips. Then slowly walked down the hall to the room his wife was in.
The children giggled. Then burst into laughter when their father threw the door open and yelled: "babe, I'm back!" Then the sound of the woman's scream of surprise.
"You guys should have seen it!" Dad said as he told them about his adventures. Dad was a former teacher, but had taken up paranormal investigation after several experiences. Now he had his own ghost hunting show. It was great to see dad on Tv talking to the dead and bringing home stories of the experiences he had while on location.
"The last place I went to was really bad." Dad continued. "It was this old house that had this super dark history."
"So it had a ton of angry ghost?" Selene asked. While most little girls loved hearing fairy tales, Selene loved ghost stories instead.
Dad shook his head. "Nope. This one had a demonic presence in it."
Alexander was wrapped into his fathers every word. While he was, supposedly, the normal one in his family (whatever that meant), Alexander wanted to be a ghost hunter like his dad. "Did you get possessed? Or did you see it?" He asked excitedly.
Dad shook his head. Sending his messy blond hair everywhere. "Sorry buddy. But I did get some good EVPs."
The children gasped. "Can we listen?!" They shouted in unison.
Their mother laughed. "Calm down you two. Your father just home." She said.
Selene and Alexander slouched in their seats. Little Selene had a pouted. She suited her name well, the girl was named for the moon goddess and sure looked like it. Her face was round and pale and framed with long black curls. But instead of her usual smiled, Selene pouted.
Dad laughed and her on the head. "Don't worry princess. You can come with me when we look over our evidence. So can listen to all the EVPs you want."
Her visibly brightened.
Alexander cheered up too. But suddenly he had a chill on the back of his neck. Like a wind was blowing into him. Normally he wouldn't pay it any mind, but he knew the difference between a draft and a presence. "Mom, Dad, I feel a chill."
His mother smiled. "Calm down sweetie. Its probably just my grandmother again."
Mom could usually see ghost. Ever since her grandmother died when she was thirteen, the old woman had hung around sometimes. The siblings never payed mind when their mother sat at the table and talked to someone they couldn't see.
"Hi great grandma!" Selene exclaimed and waved even though she couldn't see her.
Her brother shrugged it off. Just a friendly spirit.
The next morning, something was diffrent.
He knew that the moment he opened his eyes. Everything was just as it always was. The super hero posters hung at their odd angles. The pile of toys in the corner remained untouched. Even Gracie, the family dog, lay calmly at his feet just when he had went to bed. But in the back of Alexanders head, the was voice screaming that something was horribly wrong.
Mom poked her head in to check on him and saw her son get out of bed. "Morning sleepy head."
Alexander rubbed the sleep from his brown eyes. "Hi mom."
"Breakfast is almost ready. So come down."
With that she closed the door and left him back to that feeling of something being diffrent. What was it?
With a sigh, he got his feet moving and went down the stairs. Mom was in the kitchen, her back toward him. She flipped the half burnt pancakes onto plates like she would every other Saturday. Dad was nowhere in sight, no doubt sleeping off the jet lag.
Then he heard the little thump thumb thump of his little sisters feet on the stairs.
"Good morning big brother."
Alexander turned to say hello, but his voice caught in his throat. I was his sister. Same purple pajamas. The same black curls that were a mess from sleeping. The same body language. But.... her eyes. Selenes big blue eyes lacked the shine they always had. As if someone had sucked out her soul and replaced it with something else.
So that was what was wrong.
The not- quite- Selene walked to the table and sat down. Their mother placed breakfast in front of her and kissed the child on the forehead.
Alexander slowly walked to the table and sat across from her. Looking at her as if she might pounce at any second. She just glared back.
Mom gave Alexander his breakfast and sat down to eat.
After breakfast was almost done, mom pointed out, "you two are awfully quiet this morning."
"I'm just tired mommy." The sister imposter said. Even the voice was the same. But Alexander heard an edge to it. Something not quite human. Maybe even evil.
Mom nodded. "Well you did stay up very late last night. Now I want you both to listen to me: I have to go out for a few hours. Either you come with me or stay home. If you stay home, I don't want you to bother your father. Understood?"
They nodded.
Alexander decided to stay home when Selene said she would. He didn't trust this little poser alone in his house.
He looked at her from his spot on the couch. Her little back facing him while she brushed a dolls hair. But the act was over now. She was messing with him at this point.
"Why are you looking at me, big brother?" She was mocking him. Because she snickered when she said big brother.
"Because you're not my sister."
She still didn't turn. "Whatever do you mean?"
"You're not Selene. You're a big faker."
"Those aren't nice things to say Alexander." She said. He nearly jumped out of his skin. Her voice had changed. It was deeper now. It was dark and low. But still smooth as silk. It definitely didn't belong to a little girl. "You aren't nice to me, then I wont be nice to you."
Selene stood up and turned around. Clutching a Teddy bear tightly in both hands. She gripped the head in one hand and the body in the other. With one tug she tore it in two. Stuffing flying everywhere. She smiled sweetly. It chilled Alexander to his very soul. "Understood?" Her voice was normal again. But the evil tone was still there. She turned on her heal and calmly walked out. Leaving Alexander looking at the dead toy in front of him. Wondering if he would be next.
