Chapter 1
UNEDITED
My mom opened the door and I rushed out, eager to meet our new neighbors. I had always been excited when I got to meet a new friend, so when my mom said I could see this friend everyday I was overjoyed. I jumped up and down as the silver car door slid open, revealing a young boy. He glanced around nervously before his eyes locked on mine. I smiled my brightest smile and ran over to him, dragging him out of the car. I could hear my mother chuckling at my enthusiasm. I let go of him, still grinning. He had large hazel eyes and floppy dark hair. His cheeks flushed slightly as I stared intently at him, forgetting how to introduce myself. A lightbulb went off in my head and I stuck my hand out towards him. His eyes widened and he looked at my hand as if it were another head. "I'm Astrid," I stated, my voice squeaking a little as I spoke. "We are going to be the best of friends!" I exclaimed. His eyes met mine and he finally smiled and took my hand in his, shaking it.
"I'm Chace."

I smiled softly at the distant memory as I hung up Polaroids of me and Chace from last year. Chace and I grew up literally side by side. He was always there when I needed him and I was there when he needed me. We were best friends and nothing would change that.
My head jerked to my right as I heard a soft tap against my window. When I saw Chace leaning out of his room window I became immediately worried. I rushed over and shooed him back into his room. I heard him chuckle through the glass as he pushed himself back inside. I quickly unlocked my window and pulled it open. I went into my closet and pulled out a thick plank of wood. I placed it across our windows and Chace climbed over. I sat down on my bed and flopped back, my legs dangling over the side. Chace joined me, doing the same. My heart fluttered when he smiled his killer smile at me. He shot up and out of the bed before pulling me up as well. He tugged me into a tight hug. I immediately hugged him back. I hadn't realized how much I had missed him over the summer. When our embrace broke we started to laugh. "Hi," I stated simply.
"Hi," he replied, nodding a bit at me. His gorgeous hazel eyes scanned my room before settling on the pictures on my desk. Most of them were of him and me from middle school. Chace raised an eyebrow and smirked at the images of him. I felt my cheeks flush a bit and my eyes widened before I grabbed the pictures and stuffed them in the drawer under the desk.
"If you wanted to look at me so much you could have just come through the window," he said, letting out a hearty laugh. It was the kind of laugh that always had girls melting or batting their eyelashes at him. I too was one of those girls. My cheeks flushed and I looked away in embarrassment. He laughed again. "So, long time no see Astrid," He said after his laughter died down. "What have you been up to this summer?" He plopped himself back down on my bed, rearranging the cream pillows to make himself comfortable. I put my index finger and thumb to my chin and stroked my imaginary beard. I sighed, pulling out my desk chair and sitting.
"Hmm.. Well I went to the kitchen a couple times and... Oh! I went to the bathroom! I got so much exercise from that, I know," I replied, the sarcasm dripping off my words. Once again, Chace let the corners of his mouth curl into a smile. "What about you? Surely your summer was more exciting than mine," I asked.
"Yeah I went to camp in California," he explained, still grinning. "Are you excited for our first year of high school?" He questioned, his smile widening. I let out a loud sigh and allowed myself to slide off the chair onto the floor.
"I don't think I can handle high school. Didn't Tyler say it was like the worst year of school?" I asked, remembering what Chace's brother had once said.
