Chapter 4

"So what happened last night? You never texted me," Maci was practically jumping up and down.

"He..and..it was perfect. But we're going to keep it low key at school. I don't want any attention," I told her. She nodded. She knew how flustered I got in the spotlight. We headed into school talking about shoes, and movies, and ice cream. That's just how we roll. I looked around cautiously. No one seemed to be looking at me. Phew. I got my books and Maci got hers. Her locker was 4 down from mine. We walked to our first class quietly.

I kept looking up whenever anyone came into the room.

"Anns calm down. You're all jumpy. No one knows," Mace calmed me down. I took a deep breath and smiled. I felt my phone buzz and looked at it.

From: Matthew (I changed it last night)

'Hey baby meet me at the park after school?'

'Sure! <3'

I put my phone back and looked at Maci. She was smirking,

"What? What?!" I asked confused.

"Nothing, nothing," she went back to doodling in her notebook. I went back to reading The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. A few minutes later I heard laughter and in walked 'The Guys' (A/N that's just what im gonna call them from now on). I went back to reading my book, pretending like I didn't notice them. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Matthew smile and I smiled too. I sneaked a peak at Maci and she was looking at me. Then she looked at her boyfriend. I looked to and saw Brian talking to Matthew. I looked back to her, a smug look on her face. I rolled my eyes and went back to reading. The clock said 5 minutes till class. Please don't bug me. Please. I pleaded inwardly. I felt like people were staring at me so I looked up and noticed Jake walking towards me.

"Hey dork long time no see," he smirked.

"You saw me yesterday," I replied.

"Oh no, I meant long time no seeing you in pain," he said and before I could react he grabbed the book out of my hands and tossed it to one of his friends. I couldn't tell who because he was blocking me. He tugged on my hair and grabbed my jaw. I closed my eyes to hide the pain. His hands became tighter on my jaw and hair. I could feel tears forming.

"Hey man, back off. Leave her alone," I heard someone say. It was Matt. Jake released his grip and turned. I took this chance to sneak a glance at Maci. Her eyes were as wide as saucers, her jaw dropped. I turned back to Jake and Matthew.

"Why should I? What good is she here?" Jake growled.

"Just leave her alone. She didn't do anything to us," Matt said fists clenched. Jake glared at him then walked back to his seat. Matt snuck a glance at me and smiled. I smiled back. D.J. threw my book at me. No literally threw. It hit me in the side and fell to the ground. I picked it up and found my page. Then the bell rang. Ugh.

I walked out of 4th hour exhausted. And I didn't even have homework. You see what school does to me? I hate it. I walked to my locker and put my books away. I shut it and turned to see Jake, D.J., Bryant, and Mark standing there glaring at me. No sign of Matthew or Brian anywhere.

"Listen here dork. You may have Matthew on your side but just watch yourself. I know plenty of other people willing to hurt you," he said then pounded his fist close to my face to make a point. D.J thought this was hysterical, he had a smirk on his face the whole time, Bryant looked like he didn't care, and I had no idea what Mark thought. Jake walked away followed by the other guys and once they turned the corner, I ran. At lunch we can eat outside if we please. There were some people out there but not enough to notice me. I ran behind a tree and sunk to the ground. I took shaky, deep breaths, trying to calm myself. What the hell just happened? Why do they hate me so much? What have I done? Now they definitely can't find out about me and Matthew. I had my phone in my pocket and heard it buzz. It was a text from Maci.
