The car came to a halt at the red light. I looked out my window; I was sitting in the backseat. There was a rainbow in the sky, and the dark threatening clouds that had lingered in the sky earlier in the day were now gone. My mom, dad, and I had gone to the store to get cake mix. It was my birthday. I looked up and suddenly I couldn’t see the rainbow anymore. All I saw was black. A sharp pain shot through my back, and I began hearing sirens. I tried moving, but something was on top of me. I wanted nothing more than to move towards the sirens, but the pain was overwhelming.
I woke up, sweat on my forehead. Tears came to my eyes and began pouring over and running down my cheeks. That dream. I had the dream often, only because that was what had happened on the afternoon of March 8, 2011. It was forever stuck in my mind. So was the fact that my parents had died, along with my soul. I lay on my bed, tossing and turning hoping to go back to sleep. However, sleep never came. I saw the sun rise through my blinds, and my sister, Spencer, knocked on my door.
“I am awake.” I said, trying not to think of my dream from that night. Spencer came in my room, as usual she was dressed in skinny jeans and a super hero t-shirt she probably bought from Hot Topic. “Sleepy head, you need to get up. Today is your first day back to school!” Spencer had become my guardian since the accident. She vowed that she would get me back in school, even if she did let me home school the rest of my school year, she was dead set on making me go back to school for my Sophomore year.
I rolled off my bed and onto the floor with a loud “thud”. I lay there, curled up in a ball, until the smell of bacon filled the house. I quickly showered and dried my hair. When my hair was dry, I went into the kitchen to see mountains of waffles, bacon, and eggs. Spencer was already sitting down and greedily scooping eggs onto her plate. Before I could take my seat at the table, the doorbell rang. I walked over to the door wondering who would be coming over at six in the morning. I opened the door slowly, only to be wrapped in a bear hug. My attacker pulled away, only to reveal her gorgeous blonde ringlets and icy blue eyes. Amelia Clark. Amelia had been my best friend since we were five and I couldn’t believe she was standing in my house. I hadn’t seen her in over a year, because she had went to stay in Italy with her cousins.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Karsen LeMorre. What on earth are you wearing?” Amelia had the biggest grin on her face. I looked down at my ninja turtle slippers and clicked my heels together.
“Well, Miss Amelia I don’t know how to call Clark. I am wearing my everyday outfit. And what are you doing back here anyhow?” I stared at her, then quickly turned and walked toward the kitchen. She followed me as she began explaining that she had transferred back to go to school here again. Spencer passed Amelia a plate and said hello. “So, did your parents move back with you?” I asked. Amelia’s parents liked to travel, and last I heard they were in Australia.
“No, they’re off traveling through Asia.” She smiled so big, I thought she was going to explode.
“Well then, who are you staying with?” I asked, and was met by silence. Spencer broke the silence when she began washing dishes.
“Well, Kar,” Spencer began, “Amelia is going to be staying with us!” A smile spread across Spencer’s face and I jumped up out of my chair and gave her a huge hug. So, maybe one good thing was going to come out of Sophomore year.
