It's been two days since we last got a call from Craig, I figured he just couldn't talk because they were working him like crazy.
Codie and I were eating her favorite lunch, peanut butter and jelly with the crusts cut off, classic Lays, and lemonade. I was munching on my chips and watching the wonderful little girl I've raised when there was a knock on our door. I put down my chips and walked towards the door, motioning for Codie to stay put. I opened the door and I saw two police officers with solemn look on their faces. One held his hands to his heart and the other held some papers.
I had a queasy feeling in my stomach and a part of me knew what they were going to tell me, but I couldn't believe it.
"I-Is he dead...?"
"After our last sneak attack, he disappeared. There is no sign of him leaving and right now, all we can do is declare him dead. We have his death certificate."
I trembled as I took the envelope that declared the supposed death of my husband. I quietly thanked the officers, closed the door, and sat back down in my seat. I could hear Codie silently munching on her potato chips.
"What's wrong Mommy?"
"Um, Daddy's playing hide and seek with his friends, but Daddy is really really good, so they can't find Daddy and we can't talk to Daddy until they find him..."
She looked disappointed at first, but she quickly nodded and went back to munching on her chips and gulping down her lemonade. I watched as she threw away her paper cup, paper plate, and her chip bag. I heard the crumple of the bag before she dropped it into the bin and went to the living room to watch TV. Millions of thoughts swirled around in my head, but the main one was: They said they couldn't find him. There's hope, he could still be alive.
That was five years ago.
