In the moonlight, Jacob was nothing more than a shadow that merged in with the tall pines that surrounded them. A breeze crept by, waxing the seconds into minutes as tension continued to flow around them. Jacob held the crossbow pointed casually at Keilin.

“What is this Jacob? I really thought you’d change. I really thought that we could start over again… As friends.”

Keilin’s eyes were thick with disappointment and fear. Jacob laughed, circling Keilin like a tiger stalks his prey right before he strikes for the kill.

“Sure you did,” Jacob growled, “Do you take me for a fool Keilin? I know you remember, Holly’s told me all about how you used her to bring back your memories. We will never be acquainted; ones spots never change, eh?”

“You have Holly?”

“Had her on my side from the very start.” Jacob grinned. “Enough jibber jabber.”

An arrow pierced Keilin’s flesh, sinking deep beneath his thigh. A cartage of images rushed through his mind, all of Holly, the blond, chestnut eyed girl who grew up to be his best friend. And then it happened, darkness burst from the pores of the earth, surfacing and slithering onto his skin, swamping into his mind and leaving it to rot. A black veil rocked his broken heart into unconsciousness.
