She was sitting on the back of her friend’s old Ford, watching the fire burn a few feet away and the people move around with beers in their hands. She didn’t want to be there with everyone, she wanted to be home with a book in her hands. Instead she was surrounded by people who were laughing and screaming over the loud music coming from a nearby truck, all because Jon asked her to come.
Grace liked going to parties, but in the past few months she just didn’t feel like partying. Ever since her brother was murdered, Grace just sort of stopped wanting to socialize with anyone. The only reason why she was even at the bonfire party tonight was because her best friend; Jon, had literally dragged her out of her house and into his old Ford. People kept offering her drinks, but all she could think of was going home. At least that’s what she kept thinking until she heard the roaring of a motor coming towards the fire. It grew louder and louder until a 1976 Chevrolet truck pulled up and three guys jumped out whooping and hollering.
All she could see was a tall, lanky guy with short blond hair walking towards her with a slightly less tall guy beside him and another guy who she couldn’t look away from. He was a little bit taller than her and wearing regular blue jeans with a plain black T-shirt that was a little too tight on him. His hair was light brown and curly from the strands that escaped from his hat. His eyes were a blue-ish green and very bright and they were staring at her.
He said something to his friends and they wandered away from him as he continued to make his way over to her. Not once did he take his eyes off her. When he finally made it to her he simply sat beside her and didn’t say a word. She thought he looked familiar but she didn’t say anything either, not wanting to make a fool of herself.
“I didn’t realize you liked parties, Gracy.”
She looked at him and finally realized who he was. It was Mitchell, her old friend from when she was a kid. The same Mitchell she hadn’t seen in over ten years much less spoken to. Grace didn’t know what to say so she only shrugged and got off the tailgate. She quickly found Jon standing by the fire with a group of girls squealing as he told them some story. Jon took one look at her and took her hand and dragged her away from all the noise so she could tell him what was wrong.
“I don’t know why he’s here… but I don’t want him to be. I haven’t seen him in over ten years and he’s acting like he knows everything about me…” There were tears in her eyes as she told Jon about the last time she saw Mitchell and how they had fought. Grace could tell that Jon was trying to follow what she was saying, but the tears and the sobs were making her incomprehensible and he just didn’t know what to say. All Jon could figure to do was pulling her to him and give her a hug and let her cry. When Grace had finished crying and felt a little better, they returned to the bonfire where she gave in and took a beer from the cooler.
“Can we talk… please.” A voice whispered in her ear as a hand started to pull her in the direction of the Chevrolet. Grace followed slowly, knowing she needs to talk to him.
He opened the passenger door for her and closed it before going to the driver’s side. He looked at her for a moment and then started talking about how bad he’s been feeling for the past ten years. Tears welled in both their eyes as they remembered the fight and what was said when they were ten years old. Grace didn’t say anything but simply looked at her hands the whole time he talked.
“I should never have told you that I hated you, Gracy! I was mad at Mom and Dad for making me move away and I took it out on you! I’m so sorry! Please just forgive me…” He was looking at her with tears running down his cheeks and his voice was shaky as he talked. “You were my best friend when we were kids… I should have called you after I moved, but I just didn’t know what to say…”
Grace wasn’t listening anymore; all she could think about was pulling him close and kissing him. She barely noticed him as he gently grabbed her face and pulled her towards him. He kissed her, slowly at first then with passion once he realized that Grace was kissing him back. She wrapped her arms around him while he tangled his fingers in her long hair. They stayed that way for a long time until one of his friends tapped on the window saying that the party was over.
“Hitch a ride with someone. I’m taking Gracy on a date and I need my truck.” He smiled as he talked and grabbed her hand to entwine their fingers. She was smiling as he started the truck. The roar of the engine was almost deafening as Mitchell pulled away from the remnants of the party all the while talking and catching up with Grace.
He took her to the beach a few miles away where they laid in the back of the truck, clinging to each other and watching the stars. They kissed and laughed all night.
“You’re still as beautiful as you were when we were ten,” he said as he played with her hair, “but now you’re all grown up and even more beautiful.” He laughed a deep, rich sound that made his entire body vibrate. Grace laughed and just pulled his face to her so that she could kiss him again.
The sun was shining and the waves were crashing on the shore when they woke tangled together in the back of his truck. They looked at each other and smiled.
“Good morning, beautiful,” was all he said before he took her face in his hands and kissed her.
