Prologue
---(::::)---
He knew he loved her, since the moment his eyes were graced enough to land upon her. When she talked the world stopped. The Sun froze and the moon turned black. Everyone around him became whispers in an everlasting wind only to be silenced by the sound of her voice. As if the invention of music was ripped from this earth and it fell silent of tune. Gravity itself reversed. He felt as though he was floating off the earth into a dark abyss. Uncertainty enthroned him. It was not awful however. He reveled in the uncertainty for he knew that with her by his side he had nothing to fear. He could cross the mighty oceans or traverse to where the light stops at the edge of the universe. Love was a fragile yet beautiful thing. It showed compassion and compromise, patience and acceptance. He knew that no obstacle could get in his way. Not money or famine or war. But there was one thing that could. Her rejection.
He wanted to confess his love for her every day. It ate away at him like bacteria slowly gnawing a dead animal until it is nothing but bones. He wanted to shout to the multitude of angles in the heavens and have them come down and sing for her. After all he would do anything for her but how could a boy like him, poor not too pleasing to the eyes, ever hope to get a sliver of attention from a girl so beautiful and loving and joyous as her. He always felt inadequate as though the world itself schemed to keep them apart. Even if the inevitability of love for a boy like him did not exist, It definitely would not be with her. Maybe someone without a family that could be mistaken for nobility, or beauty as captivating as the Greek tragedies.
He needed to redeem himself in her eyes. To show her he was more than just a poor boy raised by a poor family. More than a man whose father left him at the age of seven. More than a coward too afraid to stand up for what he believed and to tell the girl he loved his undying affection for her. He was not worthy of her and no amount of preaching about Jesus and his dying on the cross would change that. He knew that anything between them would end up obliterating any chance of normalcy. But should that hold him back? He had wrestled with this since he met her. He weighed the positive and negative probabilities and determined that this was his only chance at true happiness but then the question arose, was it hers?
