Ian McKenna was not a man to be trifled with. His face hard and body stiff with tension, he led the small group of soldiers to the new castle.
He dreaded what awaited him. He had painstakingly avoided this fate for thirty years. But now, his king needed someone he trusted at the newly acquired keep. He felt no joy as his new status as laird, or rather laird-to-be.
The king had all but ordered him to marry the lady of the keep. Her father had lost his mind after the tragic death of his wife and the king could not afford to leave the castle, located so close to the border, unguarded without a laird.

So he,Ian McKenna, beloved of the king (never had he regretted it before) had to now make the ultimate sacrifice and marry the lass. He knew not how she looked and cared not if she had eleven toes or crooked teeth. He would perform his duty, consummate the marriage, beget an heir and then they would be free of eachother. Free to live out their lives in peace, away from eachother at opposite ends of the keep.
After all, neither could possibly be happy about their predicament.
Having convinced himself he straightened his shoulders and looked ahead, determined to reach before nightfall.
