Chapter One - Day at the beach
River's POV:
During lunch I sit alone in the school's cafeteria when I hear a familiar voice.
"What's up man" Ben asks while he gives me a friendly slap on the back. Startled, I turn around to face my best friend Ben who has a big grin on his face. He takes the chair on the other side of the table to sit in front of me.
"Why the hell do you sneak up like this?" I say instead of answering his question."Looks like somebody's on their period, though. Jeez, you seriously have to drink a tea or something."
"What do you want?"
"The question is why you're still acting like a moody teenage girl who got her heart broken. Is it because of Rose? You're acting like this for almost a month by now. I know as your best friend I should support you, but I don't see the point in this. She isn't worth it, River. There are millions of other girls on this planet."
Rose and I were a couple for two years and about a month ago she broke up with me.
Since that day I'm feeling kind of depressed, I barely sleep and stay at home most of the time. I know I need to move on, but she will always be a part of my life. I just can't move on. Maybe someday I can, maybe I even find someone else, but definitely not now."River, you can't stay like this the rest of your life." Cameron who takes a seat next to Ben, interfers in our conversation. "I mean you shouldn't care about love since you can fuck every girl you want. Boy, the girls are crazy about you. Plus your dad is one of the most dangerous men in this city. You should be manly as fuck. I'm just saying"
My dad is Paul Valentino, the CEO of the Valentino Bank. What most people don't know is that he is not only the CEO of an international bank, but also the head of a mafia clan which has the nick name "The Tigers". He is using the bank to cover up his actual "work", so no one would suspect him. My dad hates the Morellis, another quite successful mafia group and wants his "family" as he calls the mafia group to be the only leading group in Venice and vice versa it is their goal to kick us out of this city. Only Ben and Cameron know about this secret as I know them my whole life.
"I'm not my dad"I roll my eyes. These boys need to stop talking about my dad. I'm not proud of what he's done and what he is. Sometimes I just wish I had a normal, boring dad who would be a taxi driver or something like that. Okay maybe not a taxi driver, but you know what I mean.
When I was little my dad teached me how to defend myself and I have to admit that it's pretty cool. However he doesn't want me to be the next big mafia boss, he just teached me in case something bad would happen and I'd need to be prepared. Nevertheless I wish all of this wouldn't be necessary, I wish I was a normal high school kid.
Damn, I should stop complaining, the boys are right, I don't act as manly as I should. I mean I shouldn't complain about my life, I'm River Valentino. The guy that could have like every girl he wanted. The handsome, popular, rich ass guy. Why should I be so depressed about a girl like Rose?
Because you still love her.
I shake my head to get rid of the annoying voice in my head. I should stop thinking about her. It's over.
Get it in your head, River.
"Riveeer?" Cameron repeats slowly for the second time when I finally notice he is talking to me. "You're lost in thoughts again, huh."
