I don't know why but the darkness that enveloped my house at night seemed so peaceful. I would stay up for hours over the summer to take it all in. I felt like it was the only time I ever had any quiet in that prison. I wanted to stay up longer but it wasn't summer anymore and soon my parents would wake up and see that I had never gone to sleep so I laid down and tried to reconnect to the barren dreamscape that I had forgotten and attempted any scenario that might entertain my mind as I forced myself out of reality.

I hesitantly walked through the front doors of the school. As soon as the harsh light from the hallway hit my eyes I could tell I wasn't like any of the other kids here and immediately felt my heart sink at the thought of being treated the same as I was last year. I stood against the wall and rummaged through the my book bag for my schedule but to no avail. Since I had obviously done something with it during my frenzy to get everything ready last night I walked into the office to find out what classes I had and where. I could feel the stares burning into the back of my head as I walked hurriedly to my destination. When I arrived no one was there so I decided to sit down and wait for someone, anyone. I sat for an hour and still no one came. I chose to get up and leave. I walked out of the very same doors I shakily walked in that morning and began walking. I'm not sure where exactly just somewhere away from that place. After wandering for almost the entire day I went home and surprisingly fell asleep.

I was jolted awake by my dad shaking my arm yelling something about being late and the sound of my phone alarm going off at full blast. I got up and he left my room. I turned my phone alarm off and checked the time 6:54 then I noticed the date. August 18th. That was normally the day we started school but I went yesterday. "We must've just started a day early. I mean it IS a new school." I thought to myself as I pulled a light blue long sleeve shirt over my head. After I got dressed I went downstairs to eat some breakfast and found myself starving. I remembered with another rumble from my stomachs I hadn't eaten anything the night before. I pulled out a bowl and poured some cereal noticing a note that lay on the counter. It readHey sweetie. Sorry we woke you up so early but your alarm was already going off and we had to leave for work. The bus should arrive around 7:30 so don't miss it and have a great first day at your new school. We'll be home around 5:00 tonight. See you then.
Love, Mom and DadWhat did they mean? Did they know I skipped yesterday? I decided to leave it alone. I didn't want to overthink things this morning. When I walked into the school I saw everyone I had seen yesterday and made my way to the office again. This time someone was in there. The lady at the desk had a name time that read Lillian. As soon as she noticed me she gave me a warm smile and a "How can I help you?" I asked her for another schedule and while she was printing it I asked why no one was in the office yesterday. "Honey everyone was probably at home planning for today. " she replied sweetly. It was making me frustrated. "So no one works in the office the first day of school?!" I half yelled. "Excuse me miss there's no need for the attitude," she snapped back " the first day of school is today. I don't know what you mean." What?! I was so confused. I jerked my schedule from the printer and walked to my first class, Mr Carnell. I walked in and took a seat in the second to last row. It was almost three minutes before the bell signaled everyone to get to class so I was the only student in there. What's your name." He asked breaking the silence. "Nicole." My one word reply left him looking slightly angered. "Okay Nicole you got a last name?" "Reeade." I said in a short breath. "Okay Miss Reeade. I have a seating chart and your name is at the front of this row." He announced pointing to the row of desks closest to his personal desk.
