Aaron had never been normal, with startling blue eyes which seemed to see right through you and electric blonde hair. He was of average height and very pale making him somewhat of an oddity in his town, where most people had dark skin and even darker hair.

When he was young he would go outside at night, much to the horror of his parents who were very protective of their only son. They warned him that he should not go out at night but he didn’t listen, night was where he was most comfortable. Able to shift through the shadows and see for hundreds of metres, it wrapped around him and thrilled him as nothing else did.

But sometimes the night was not so nice, sometimes it contained howling creatures, hidden from view, but you could see a faint shadow from the lights that lit up the city, and the shadows were scary, they were distorted from the placing of the lights and changed an ordinary man’s shadow into a crazy monkey shadow.

One night, after curfew he snuck out at the age of 10 and headed to the town statue of their founder, Cornelius Blackmere. He kept in the shadows, the light blinding him after so long in the dark of his home. But when he got there, he saw a big shadow, he shrugged it off as there were sometimes workmen at work in the city, working through the night, but as he saw it come closer the hairs on his back rose as he glimpsed it, that wasn’t a worker, he thought. That was some sort of beast, and it was. A big dog around 5 metres tall was pacing around the statue, as if it was keeping guard.

He saw a man in front of the mayor’s mansion walking straight towards the dog, but he took no notice walking right past the dog. As if it wasn’t there.

He decided he would head back to home. Towards the safety of home, the dark no longer being comfortable as it had seemed but a minute ago. He walked for a few seconds, slowly speeding up to a jog then a run, then a wild sprint fuelled by his fear of the unknown threat. But as he sped up the dog heard him and sprinted towards him, jumping 5 metres at a time and after around thirty seconds it caught up to him, with a ferocious howl, “I wish I could escape” he thought over and over, closing his eyes In fear, with his heart beating hard as he watched the dog bend down towards him.  As if to inspect him. But then, Aaron disappeared.

He disappeared straight out of thin air. Though he didn’t know at the time he only knew that the dog was now looking around as if he was now lost, even though he hadn’t moved. He shrugged, it didn’t matter, all that mattered was he was safe for now. So he rushed home, and slept covered by his blankets through the night, the slightest sound through the house make him jump.

The next day his parents were acting weird, muttering under their breath to each other like, “It’s not safe here.” And “We have to send him back”.

When he finally confronted them in the middle of the day about their weird behaviour they changed the topic saying, “How would you like to go to Rosenberry’s for ice-cream, I think that after being a good boy for us you deserve a special treat.” He was puzzled by their strange behaviour, but he knew it was something to do with last night. So he listened in to them until he fell asleep during the night.

Bad dreams haunted him that night, he was running through an alley in the dark, fumbling. He couldn’t see for some reason but he heard moans and saw a horde of dogs following with ferocious fangs. They were bigger than him by at least a head. When he got away from them, they appeared again chasing him until he closed his eyes in fear and woke up panting and covered in sweat.
