Prologue

Jay's POV

"That’s the last of the lot, miss,” The large, burly man said in a gruff voice as he set down a cardboard box in the living room to my new apartment.

Quickly signing off on the dotted line and handing him back his clipboard, I smiled gratefully at him and dug out some extra change for his services. “Thank-you so much for your help!”

With a slight nod of his head, the mover made his way out of my apartment.

Shutting the door quietly behind him, I leaned my forehead against it and sighed. It had been a long day, moving from my parents’ house to my own apartment.

My own brand new apartment. My heart felt warm just thinking about it. I was so thankful that I had worked diligently throughout college and saved up just enough money to pay for the rent here. Sure, my parents would have agreed to lend me the money without a second thought, but where was the fun in that?

Turning around with my back against the door, I surveyed the sight before me. Boxes of all sizes were piled up on top of each other at the side of the living room. I didn’t even realise I had this much stuff until I’d started packing 2 weeks ago. I never thought that I was the type to hold on to sentimental things, but the clearing out of my childhood room had told me otherwise. Why I was unable to let go of a macaroni-and-glue sculpture I’d made in kindergarten I didn’t know, but since I couldn’t bring it here, my mom had insisted on putting it on display in the living room ‘for my sake‘. I knew she secretly wanted to keep it because she would miss me.

Both my sister and I had moved out as soon as we left college, and now the house was much emptier than before. Mom had wanted me to stay, but I wanted to go out and experience life on my own. I know I’m her baby girl, but hey, baby girls still have to grow up and become independent, right?

After taking a quick shower, I wrapped my bathrobe around me and walked out onto the small balcony overlooking the streets. My apartment overlooked a city street, but was surprisingly affordable. As I watched the cars speed by, the wind whipped through my hair and I felt a sense of contentment, coupled with a hint of loneliness.

This was it. This was me starting out on my life as an independent woman. This was me embracing my bright and exciting future. This was me walking out into the real world, experiencing new things and meeting new people.

As it turned colder, I left the balcony and stared at the mess in my living room. Well, as much as I wanted to embark on my future ASAP, some things could wait.

Changing into my pyjamas and settling into my new bed, I closed my eyes and drifted off into deep slumber.
