Chapter 29

Liam woke with a start. Something was wrong, and he felt it in his gut. Ahvie was gone, and Liam reacted on instinct. He ran for the machetes and shifted into a bear.

Liam wasted no time and crashed through the doorway, leaving the twins to sit there on the balcony, questioning his sanity. Brandon looked at Carter, with confusion mixed with more confusion. Carter decided that if he was crashing through the doorway, there was a good reason. And with that, they were out the door, one in the air, silent as the night. The other running across the seemingly narrow hallway.

It was worse for Liam though. He was so big that the walls literally grew when he crashed down the hallway. Brandon noted how his nose was in the air. He was searching for someone. And Brandon made another connection. The only reason Liam would do such a thing, was for Ahvienda. She was in trouble.

Liam halted in the destroyed hallway, and sniffed the air. He looked toward the right, at one of the doors. Carter caught his eyes though. They reminded him of Max. They were filled with pure hatred and anger. They were cold and unresting.

Liam broke through the doorway without a seconds hesitation. On the other side, was something worse than he thought. There was a room full of Navy Seals. And the room lit up instantly. Liam saw Ahvie duck behind a couch, and Liam met her there, shifting into human. "What did you do?"

"Me? Nothing. I was trying to follow Max, and on my way back, I got stuck here. Surprise! Room of soldiers."

"We need Max here. Seals are next to impossible to kill. They are the best of the best."

"Well, damn. We're screwed."

Chapter 30

Max walked out of the elevator to the sound of gunshots. He knew Ahvie had been watching them. He also knew she was scared. But Max didn't care. He was going to take down The Man. If it took everything he had. But first, he was going to say goodbye. Max walked into the apartment through the destroyed doorway.

He continued on into the room he had lain Nina down in. He continued to ignore the sound of gunshots as the soldiers shot at The Changed in the other apartment. He picked up the sounds of sirens, probably from the gunshots... and the fire.

Max unsheathed the dagger that would bring back Nina. He looked at her, anger boiling in his chest, but it was outweighed with sorrow and grief. Max had a bad feeling in his gut. A feeling that this wouldn't work. "I'm sorry Nina," Max said as he raised the dagger over his head. "I'm sorry." And Max drove the dagger into Nina.

Nothing happened. There was no reaction as a dagger was hilt deep in her chest. Max turned to the door. He was angry. And someone was going to get hurt. The heat was boiling in his chest. Growing quickly and bringing him to his knees.

Max realized it wasn't him, and he turned around. On the bed, was Nina. But her chest crackled with red hot energy. The lines growing and heating the room, protruded the knife, glowing just as hot. Max stood from his knees, to see Nina standing in front of him. Two glowing daggers in her hand.

Chapter 31

Carter flew across the apartment and sat behind one of the soldiers firing his gun. He was so far in the back, no one really took notice to him. Carter watched as he shot from his gun, and decided he had enough of it. He shifted, and brought his arm's around the soldier's neck. Holding him there until his pulse died down, and he was unconscious.

Carter grabbed the man's gun and took the opportunity. He knew his scimitar wouldn't do much, but he grabbed the soldier's gun. It slid out of his hand with ease and Carter brought it to him. He remembered all the combat lessons from his brother and began to shoot at the other soldiers. But they caught on fast and turned to him. The returning fire forced Carter to return to his brother.
