Ben woke up and looked at his wrist watch. The air was cold and from the view in the window it still looked dark outside.
"4:48am" Ben spoke out but in a low tone like a whisper.
Ben sat up to see if anybody was up too as he gazed around the vast hall. He did not seem to notice any movement but as he was about to lay down again, he heard an hissing sound like something moved behind him.
The moment he turned to look what it could be, he was shocked as he saw a boy unzipped a bag like he was looking for something really valuable.
Ben saw the boy and noticed that the bag the boy just opened was his mountain back pack.
" hey you! What the hell are you looking for in my bag?" Ben attacked. The boy paused and raised his eyes to look at Ben. "I..i...er....need to bo...rrow your...emm.... tooth paste, mine is finished and..emm...." The boy replied in a shaky and unstable voice. "What do u mean by that? I know your face and I know that you don't stay close to me. Your place is like ten beds away from mine and non of your neighbors could borrow you an ordinary paste?" Ben asked the boy but the expression on his face did not require an answer.
As Ben looked at the bag the boy just unzipped, he noticed that the small pocket where he kept his money was wide open and empty. "Let me have my money and every other thing u took from my bag" Ben said as he stretched his left hand towards the direction of the boy like he wanted to receive something. "I......Ok here is your money, power bank and phone, that's all I took from your bag. Please don't tell the commander.....I promise not to come near you ever again." the boy pleeded.
As the boy was about to leave, Ben stared at him like he wanted to do more than just retrieving his property.
Later that day, after the training and morning devotion, Ben met with Debby and told her what had happened to him earlier that morning and showed her the boy. She laughed at him and when she noticed that he was serious, she calm herself and looked at the boy for another moment as Ben broke the silence.
"I have to do something but I Dont want to tell the commander about it" Ben said. "Ok I will help you tell him then" she replied with a small wicked smile on her face.
"No please. I have other plans. I am going to give him a second chance and if he tries to steal from me or anybody again, then I will tell the commander myself " he begged.
"Ok Mr. I gotta move now, I'll catch up with you later" she replied and walked away.
Ben decided to go early for launch then later he met with Aina at the store where snacks were sold.
"What's up?" Aina asked.
"I have something to tell you but that would be later, when we get home" Ben replied. "Hmm I wonder what that would be, but that's by the way. Are you going to compete tomorrow at the end-day's competition?" She asked with her eyes gazing straight into Ben's eyes. "Er...I don't know what the competition is about but I would like to compete" he answered with a small grinn.
"Ok that's great, let's get you a tag for the competition" Aina said and grabbed Ben by the hand and pulled him to the tent where people go to register their names for the the competition.
They both entered the tent and walked to a table where a man was sitting. The man had blue eyes, curly brown shiny hair and looked like a foreigner but his skin color was not as bright as any white man's skin. But they were sure he was an halfcast.
"Good pm sir my name is Aina, my friend here is Ben and he wants to register for the competition tomorrow" Aina said to the man.
"Ok here is the form" the man gave Ben a small note to fill in his details and a tag that had the number '6' printed on it. " oh! Thank God we came early, your tag says '6' that means you are the last contestant lucky boi"Aina said in a teesing way and pulled Ben by the hand again as they both left the tent.
For a moment Ben wondered how the competition would be like. He stopped and dragged Aina backwards so as to get her attention again. "I have never been here before and I don't know what the competition looks like, can you brief me on how its gonna be?" Ben asked.
"Look its nothing to worry about, just the normal training routine but you have to do it faster and better. Execpt if you would be the starter"Aina answered. "Ok here we go again. What does the starter do in the competition? Like what's his job? I_ _" "look here! Why are you freaking out? Nobody is killing anybody in the competition and besides, its gonna be fun. Ok here is the deal. The 'starters' are the first people to go through the some sort of process before the 'enders'. There are three things on three tables for the 'starters' to do, and there would be three 'starters' each for every table. On the table one, the 'starter' would have to eat a hot boiled egg and drink a cup of hot coffee. On the table two, the starter would have to drink a bottle of cold mineral without stopping or resting to catch their breath and on table three, the starter would have to eat a bowl full of the African garri (cassava flakes popularly known as 'eba') and egusi soup." She cuts in without allowing Ben to finish his questions.
"Wow that's gonna be cool, I wanna be part of the 'starters'" He grinned as they deperted to their hostels.
