Getting to Know You

I paid for the shoes and thanked the saleslady.

“Thank you.” I said to Josh.

“You’re welcome. Now, you’ll help me buy shoes for my sister.”

      “Sure. No problem.”

      While looking for shoes...

“So, what brought you to Korea?” he asked.

“Nothing. Just travelling. I just love going to places I’ve never been before. What about you?”

      “The usual, work.”

      “Where are you from originally?”

      “I’m from the Philippines. You?”

      “Me too.”

“What a great coincidence. Do you go home often?”

“I haven’t been home for a couple of years but I’ve been planning to go back after this. What about you?”

“I haven’t been home for a year. I miss my family but I have a contract with my company. I have to stay here for two years.” He is smiling but there is sadness in his eyes.

“Hey, those shoes look good.” Then he walked. I think he’s trying to change the subject. So I laughed.

“Why are you laughing?” he asked.

“Did you do that to change the subject?”

“Was it that obvious?” he laughed too.

“Well, yeah.” I said, still laughing.

      “Epic fail, right? Hahaha.”

“But those shoes do look good.”

      “You think?”

      “Yeah.”

“Then I’m gonna buy this for my sister. Wait for me, okay?”

      “Sure.”

He walked a few steps then stopped. He turned around and said to me. “You tried to change the subject.”

“Actually, I did change the subject. Without you realizing it. Hahaha.”

“You’re good!” Then he turned around again and continued walking.

After a while, he came back. “Have lunch with me.” He said.

      “O-Okay.”

We walked outside of the shoe store.

“Do you know any good place to eat here?”

      “Nope. Not yet anyway.”

“Good. We’ll go to one of the must-visit places here.”

Then he held my hand and pulled me. My heart started acting crazy again. Like its fast beating earlier wasn’t fast enough.

We stopped in front of Myeongdong Gyoja restaurant.

“There’s a lot of people here.” I said.

“That’s because they are famous. Their specialty is the kalguksu or the knife cut noodles.”

We ordered the kalguksu and gyoja (dumplings).

“This is really good.” I said.

      “Told ‘ya!”

After we’ve eaten we said goodbye to each other but before he walked away...

“Can I see you again tomorrow?” he asked.

      “Sure.”

      “I’ll call you. Bye.”

      “Bye.”

-----

The whole time I was with Josh, my heart kept pounding so hard. I was actually surprised that he didn’t hear it.

Who would've thought that it was him? The guy that that fortune-teller was telling me about.
