Mary ached to see Joe with her, in the place that she once was.
How they had been so close, and then it seemed like he was done.
She could feel it in the way they talked and acted nowadays.
That something about the way he felt had gone from ten to one.
He never said he was with Jane, but their time together gave it away.
And whenever Mary saw them, she felt a déjà vu.
She and Joe weren't technically together, but as close as they could be.
And now Mary sits at home thinking, 'I wonder, what did I do?'
Mary and Joe met years ago and saw each other every so often.
They grew close quickly and talked all the time.
They supported each other and helped each other out;
Could basically call each other anytime.
They enjoyed each other's company,
Both alone and in a group.
But lately they'd been disconnected,
And Mary felt very out of the loop.
Then one day she went to a party,
And she saw Joe with Jane.
She had gone to introduce herself,
And then her heart felt like it'd been hit by a train.
"Hello, I'm Mary." She said as she extended her hand.
"Hey, I'm Jane." Said the girl by Joe.
Jane then gestured to Joe and asked if Mary knew him.
Mary thought to herself she probably knew him best, but at that moment she let it go.
"Um, yea, I'm a good friend of his." Mary told her.
"Oh, sorry, I didn't know; Joe's never mentioned you." Said Jane.
That's when it hit her that Joe was through with her.
And as Mary walked away, in her heart was a growing pain.
She walked home and began crying, and knew that she'd been right.
That for some reason Joe decided to leave her behind.
Days after the party, Joe hadn't said a word.
And Mary was very miserable at how quickly things declined.
And then one day out of the blue, she got a text from Joe.
It simply said, 'I'm sorry for what I did to you'.
Mary then tried to call him, but he never answered his phone.
After many weeks of calling, she wondered, 'What am I putting myself through?'.
So Mary decided Joe would never know she'd loved him,
And she'd try to let their memories go.
She'd attempt to forget all those moments they'd shared,
All those times so long ago....
