Moved to Manchester, England

Today marks the start of a new beginning, right?

I’ve just moved to Manchester, and it’s quite different from back home. Everything’s so close together and people look at me like I’m crazy; well I guess I‘ll have to get used to it. I mean, this’ll be my home for at least the next four years.

As I walk into the University of Manchester an overwhelming feeling takes hold of me, I don’t know anyone here. There’s a lot of chattering around me, many young people like me, trying to find their dorm rooms, and making new friends. I find a long hallway and decide this is the right one. As I walk along I silently read off the numbering on the walls. 121, 122, 123… Ah, 124, here it is. I take a deep breath and open the door. What I seen is not what I was expecting. A guy is flopped down on one of the beds and reading a book. I quietly cleared my throat and he looked at me startled.

“I thought the dorms were separated between boys and girls,” I said unsurely as I picked invisible lint off my shirt.

“Me too, I guess they changed it or something?” he replied. “Did I detect an American accent?” he asked me and smiled.

As I noticed his cheek dimple, I blushed and nodded.

“Since I guess we’re room mates, I should probably start off with my name, I’m Dan Howell. And you are?”

“Um, uh, Erin Lane,” I stuttered and mentally slapped myself for being so shy.

“Nice to meet you, Erin,” he said and began reading his book again.

I smiled and walked over to my new bed. My walls and bed could really use a makeover, I thought. I put my suitcases on the bed and took my posters box from one of them. I proceeded to hang up some Muse, Paramore, My Chemical Romance, and a few Doctor Who posters up with sticky tack. I stood back and smiled at my work. I then put a colorful sheet on my bed. Yes, this was starting to feel like home.

“Hey, nice posters,” I hear Dan say.

“Uh, thanks,” I reply back, blushing again.

I started unpacking everything else when I realized I forgot to bring my flat iron.

“Oh my god, are you kidding me?” I groaned.

“What’s wrong?” The brown haired boy asked.

“Ugh, nothing, I just forgot my flat iron, that’s all,” I said looking a bit irritated.

He had a thoughtful look on his face when he replied with, “We can share mine until you get a new one.”

“Really? Thanks,” I said happily, “Wait, you straighten your hair?”

“Yeah.” He said laughing, “My natural hair is really curly… Like hobbit hair, seriously.”

I noticed how attractive his laugh was, it’s warm, and I really like it.

“Aw I bet it looks good,” I said, laughing with him.

“But my hair will never look as good as yours, I mean yours is fucking awesome,” he answered and I blushed for what seemed like the thousandth time today.

“Oh,’ I laughed nervously, “Ermm, thanks.”

I bit my lip and smiled.

“Seriously, it’s really cool,” he said, his cute dimple showing.

A long silence occurred until Dan spoke up again. “Would you maybe want to get coffee now, or something? I mean, this place is kind of boring and I know a nice little coffee shop down the street,” he said softly.

“Oh, sure,” I answered briefly.

“Alright, follow me,” he said while getting off the bed and strolling out the doorway.

What have I gotten myself into? I asked myself, as I followed behind Dan closely.

It was a nice, sunny day for England. The birds chirped as if saying hello, and there was just a slight breeze. I was really enjoying the silent walk to the coffee shop.

“Alright, this is it,” Dan said as he stopped abruptly.

He was right; it really was a nice little coffee shop. As we walked in the familiar scent of coffee and freshly baked bread filled my nostrils.

“Okay, I’ll order us some drinks while you find us a booth, what do you want?” he asked me.

“Oh, I guess I’ll take a caramel macchiato with whipped cream, please,” I said politely.

He nodded and walked off to the serving counter, as I searched for a booth to sit in. I finally chose a cozy looking spot in the corner next to the window; I then slid into the red vinyl seat and waited for Dan. A couple minutes later the brunet haired boy took the seat in front of me and on a tray were not only our coffees, but two delicious looking pastries.

“Dan,” I whined, “I thought we were only getting coffee, how much do I owe you?” I asked.

‘”Hey, you don’t owe me anything,” he said between sips of his coffee. “I just thought I’d be nice and order us both these… things.”

“You don’t even know what they’re called?” I laughed. Where did this confidence in me come from? I thought.

“I always eat them, but I can never pronounce it correctly so, I just call them, um, things, I guess,” he said with a broad grin across his face. “Go ahead and try it, I promise it’s delicious.”

“Alright,” I said unsurely as I picked up the pastry. The second I bit into it I knew my eyes had gotten wide. It really was delicious!

“Oh my god, this is really good!” I exclaimed after swallowing the big bite of my pastry. “This is strawberry and cream cheese, Am I right?” I asked.

“Yeah, you’re right, and I know, it’s really good, it’s my favorite thing to get here ever,” he chuckled quietly and took a bite of his pastry.

“Well next time we come here I’m definitely paying, okay?” I said

“Of course, of course,” he said, “Wait, so we’ll be coming here together again in the future?” he asked with a sly grin.

“Well sure, I don’t see why not,” I said curling my lips into and warm smile and sinking into the comfy seats.
