As Lily walked into the tryout room, she noticed an empty drum kit in the corner and an abandoned bass on the floor. She turned, saw the three judges, and stiffened. You can do this, Lill. You’ve been practicing for months. She started to relax and, taking a deep breath, started her song.

I don’t wanna be the girl that laughs the loudest

Or the girl that never wants to be alone.

I don’t wanna be that call at four o’ clock in the mornin’, cause I’m the only one you know in the world that won’t be home.

She realized that someone had recognized her song, picked up the bass, and started playing along. As the beat picked up, she cracked one eye open and saw that the judges were smiling and nodding their heads and humming the newly introduced lead guitar. They like it! Yessss!

I don’t wanna be the girl that has to feel the silence

I reveled in the pause in the music.

The quiet scares me ‘cause it screams the truth.

Please don’t tell me that we had that conversation

I won’t remember, so save your breath cause what’s the use?

Lily had no idea who was playing behind her, or how anyone could humanly play that well, and she didn’t care. She was completely lost in the music. This hasn’t happened since…well, a while, she thought, avoiding the painful subject. She realized that she was smiling. This all just feels so good! Next came her favorite part.

When it’s good, then it’s good, it’s so good ‘til it goes bad,

Til’ you’re tryin’ to find the you that you once had.

I have heard myself cry never again,

Broken down in agony and just tryin’ to find a friend.

She looked at each judge in turn, trying to gauge their reaction from their faces. From the looks of it, she was doing amazingly!

I’m safe, up high; nothing can touch me, so why do I feel this party’s over?

No pain, inside, you’re like perfection, so how do I feel this good sober?

As the band behind her played the closing chords, she turned and looked at the newly occupied instruments. Her mouth dropped open in surprise. Behind her were the four cutest guys she had ever seen. She twisted around as she heard her name being said by the middle judge.

“Congratulations, Ms. Entwhistle, you’ve made the band.”
