Isis was sitting at a table eating dinner. She was supposed to be on one of her dates, but her mother had informed her that she was to have dinner with her mother and a couple other coven leaders. Isis almost preferred her failed dates.
Isis was surrounded by middle aged men and women who had antiquited notions of marriage. They talked about her like she wasn't there and she wished someone here was close to her age. Present was Melissa Cho, leader of a coven close to the area. She had not gone on a date with anyone from her coven yet and she was sure it would happen soon.
"How about Jim? He's third in command for our coven." Melissa Cho sipped from her wine glass as she went down a list of eligible bachelors.
Marie shook her head. "No, that's not good enough. Isis is to be the leader of our coven, she can't marry someone that far down the line."
Marie stabbed some salad with her fork and chewed dainitily. "Isn't your son Michael unmarried?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, but he is already promised," Melissa balked.
"And is their coven more powerful than ours," Marie asked, fork raised in the air.
"No, but-"
"Doesn't it make more sense for the two most powerful covens in the region to intermarry," Marie interrupted. "Your status would skyrocket. Besides, it's not like they're married yet."
Melissa swallowed. Isis could tell that she was not happy with the direction this conversation was headed, but she knew her mother. She could convince Yoda to the dark side.
"I'm not sure," Melissa said, shaking her head. "I would have to speak with Michael."
Marie nodded. "Do that and I will set up a little get together for our children." Marie reached across the table and grabbed Melissa's hand. "You will not regret this."
__________________________"Why is he picking me up here?" Isis was sitting at her mothers house, waiting for Michael Cho to pick her up.
Marie had affectively scared the Cho's coven into accepting this arrangement. Isis knew this meet and greet was only a formality. Her mother did not care if she liked her future partner, only that he helped increase their covens power. She was sure that Marie had already made up her mind about Michael.
"I want to make sure that he actually shows. I heard he was not happy about being forced to break up with his bethrothed." Marie shrugged.
"Oh." Isis knew her mother was cunning, but she didn't even care that she had ruined someone else's relationship. Isis felt disgusted.
"Don't tell me you're having second thoughts," Marie asked.
"No mother, I was just wondering if we had reservations and who made them."
"He made them. Insisted actually." Marie took a drink of her Scotch.
Isis stood up and began pacing. She felt nervous and sick to her stomach. This was it and she wasn't sure if she was ready. She knew that one day she would have to marry and take over the coven, but this soon? She felt her mouth become dry.
"Sit down dear. You must not show your emotions," Marie said.
Isis sat. "Yes ma'am."
The doorbell rang and Isis wanted to flee.
Marie snapped her fingers. "Sit up straight."
Isis immediately straightened her shoulders and felt ashamed of herself. She straightened the skirt of her navy blue, polka dot dress and crossed her red heels at the ankle. She had already freshened her red lipstick earlier. One side of her hair was pulled back and her glasses had been magicked to match her outfit. Breathe, you'll be fine.
