Um. Return of Ava Drake - she's in the 'Doctor's Mistress' too, those these stories aren't linked in any way. Just a use of the same OC.Enjoy!!!
“Run me through this again,” Kirk asked.
Ava sighed. “Our mission is to contact the Betazoid-Demons-Angels from-”
“I get what we’re doing. What I don’t understand is why this is classed as a First Contact mission.”
“Because they’re recognised as a species apart from both mine and the Betazoids. Therefore you should treat them as a separate race.”
“And so we’re…?”
“Just a trade thing really – the usual transport between my home planet and theirs is busy. So the Federation sent us instead.”
Kirk scowled. “Great.”
~
“Greeting sister,” welcomed the blonde Beta-Angel as Kirk, Spock and Ava entered the hall. Ava’s species was separated into two sections – the tall blonde Angels and the black-haired, tailed Demons.
Ava bowed slightly. “Hello sister.”
“What are you doing here?” The angel returned, as customs dictated.
“We’re here to resume the duties of the Raven.”
“My name is Arianna.”
“Ava.”
Arianna nodded and extended her hand, which Ava took. Arianna looked over at Kirk. “Please feel free to wander around the colony.” She looked at a male Beta-Demon. “Dianni will look after you.” She looked at Ava. “Come sister, let us drink.”
~
“So, this is nice.” Kirk commented, following the guide through the tree-lined path.
“This planet has been terraformed rather efficiently,” Spock commented.
Kirk rolled his eyes. “That’s appreciation for you.” He looked over at a large ceremony. “What’s happening over there?”
Dianni looked back with a grin. “Come and look.”
“What’s going on?” Kirk whispered.
“It’s a holiday,” Dianni whispered back.
“Which holiday?”
Dianni shrugged. “We’re just doing a renewal of old bonds.”
“Bonds?”
“Demon-Angel Kind acknowledge both romance and friendship by ceremonies of bonding.” Spock interjected.
Dianni nodded. “Some people want to redo the bonging ceremonies.” He grinned at them. “Care to be bonded?”
Kirk raised an eyebrow. “Uh…”
~
“Betazoids really are fascinating,” Ava said from her position on the bridge. “Especially the half-breeds. They’re very telepathically active.” She shot a look over her shoulder at the captain. “What did you two do?”
“We participated in the local ceremony,” Spock revealed.
“Really? Which one?”
“Hmm?” Kirk asked.
“Well, which ceremony did you choose? There were two.”
“Um…which one has the ribbon?”
There was a loud disbelieving noise, and then Ava fell from her chair in helpless giggles. Her station was unmanned for at least five minutes as she rolled on the ground.
The senior staff watched her in silence. Finally she pulled herself up from the floor and a stand-in took her place as she walked up to the Captain’s chair, placing her hands on the arm rests and leaning over so that they were at eye level. “Congratulations.”
“For what?” Kirk asked hesitantly, afraid of the answer.
“On your marriage of course!”
“Right. Say that again,” Kirk demanded, after pulling her into the meeting room. She sat down.
“Marriage?”
Spock raised an eyebrow. “That does not seem likely.”
She shrugged. “Tell me exactly what happened.”
“Well, there was a ribbon and there were some words and-”
“What words?” Ava interrupted Kirk.
Spock repeated them to her. She laughed. “Yes! See, you’re definitely married.” She looked at Spock. “Don’t you speak Betazoid?”
“Your species does not have marriage ceremonies.”
“I know that. But these are half-Betas, the ceremony is half-Betazoid.”
Spock frowned.
“Well, derived from both Betazoid and Demon-Angel culture, I should say,” Ava rambled on.
“How do we fix it?” Kirk asked.
She blinked. “Um…fix it?”
Kirk leant forward. “How do we get divorced?”
Ava sighed, pulling away her hair. “I was afraid you’d say that.” She bit her lip. “Well, luckily we’re heading back home.” She tutted. “I hope you guys have vacation time saved up.”
~
“Okay. What are we doing here?” Kirk looked around the small cottage.
Ava copied his movement, taking in the scenery. “Um.”
Spock answered for her. “As Ava has already explained, to get a divorce, by the rules that we were bonded by, we have to spend three months together.”
“But-”
“Listen, do you want the divorce or what? Besides, it’s practically a vacation. And there’s peace and quiet around here, we’re in one of the practically uninhabited parts of the planet.” She shrugged. “And it’s the Angel planet, so it’s nice and cold and peaceful and everything.” She held up her arms. “There’s a village down the path a bit to keep you entertained.” She looked at Spock. “You know the drill right?”
Spock inclined his head.
“Great.” She turned to leave. “I’ll see you guys in three months then.”
“I-”
She turned back and stepped close to Kirk. “I’ll take care of your ship Jim. You enjoy yourself, okay?”
Kirk began exploring the house. It was small but homely. He could see himself living there. A living room, a bedroom, two bathrooms, a study-library, laundry, kitchen….
Hmmm, something felt wrong.
He went over the house again. Yeah there was…
“There’s only one bedroom!” he exclaimed, finally figuring out the problem.
“That is typical of this style of house.” Spock told him from where he was sitting in the lounge room.
“But…” Kirk faltered as he re-entered the living room. “So…who’s taking the bed?”
Spock looked up at him. “I believe the point is to share.”
Kirk frowned. “But that’s…”
Spock blinked at him. Kirk sighed. “Never mind.”
~
Kirk threw the ball up in the air and caught it again, spread out on his back on the couch in boredom. Spock watched the Captain with a small frown creasing his forehead.
“Perhaps we should go to the village?” Spock suggested.
Kirk looked at him and threw the ball up again. “If you want.”
Spock tilted his head. Kirk had been acting odd ever since the true meaning behind the ceremony that had partaken in. He was acting similar to the way he acted when he was caged or under pressure. Spock claimed full responsibility for not checking the ceremony before agreeing to undergo it.
Kirk sat up. “So we going or…?”
Spock tilted his head.
~
Kirk watched as a little demon girl bundled up against the cold ran past them. Kirk pulled his own jacket around him too, missing the heated house.
The whole planet was constantly at temperatures far below Earth standards. The villages, however, had a centre piece that heated a specified area of the town and outlying area to a more acclimatised temperature. This was for the Demon-Kind originally, who came from a desert-temp planet; they could not survive in the same climate as the Angels. Kirk looked at the people in the village. There were more Angels than Demons, unsurprisingly – the Demons all in layers, while the Angels in casual summer outfits. Kirk gave a small laugh and watched his breath turn the air white. He shook slightly. Spock noted the shiver and pulled off his own jacket to offer it to the Captain. Kirk shook his head.
“Captain, it would not be wise to allow yourself to get sick.”
Jim gave him a look and took the jacket, wrapping it loosely around himself. It was still warm.
“Do we have money?” he asked. There was only one shop in the small place. There were not many Angels in existence – one of the smallest civilisations in the known universe. There were less than twenty houses in the village.
Spock looked around. “These people run on an information based currency.”
“What does that mean?” Kirk asked as he followed Spock into the store.
Spock gestured to the man at the counter, chatting to a woman. The woman smiled and grabbed her bags and left the store.
“Hello.” The man said.
“Greetings.” Spock replied.
“What are you doing here?”
“Exploring the village.”
“I’m Rin.”
“Spock.”
“Can I help you guys?”
Spock looked at Kirk, who blinked back. “Um… what have you got?”
The man shrugged. “Bunch of things. What are you interested in?”
Kirk looked around and shrugged. They didn’t need food yet… “Um, well…I’ve been a bit bored…”
“Book or game?”
“Um…”
The man rolled his eyes, stepping away from the counter and pulling something from a shelf. “Try this.”
Kirk looked at it suspiciously. “What is it?”
“A game.”
“How do you play?”
Rin shrugged. “I’m still trying to figure that out.”
Kirk looked at it and tapped a few buttons. It beeped. Kirk looked up. “Is that good?”
Rin shrugged again. “Honestly. No idea. Tell me if you figure it out.” He looked at Spock. “You’re different from the other Vulcans we see around here.”
Spock inclined his head. “I am half-human.”
Rin blinked. “Really?” He leant back on the counter and drummed his fingers. “Ambassador Sarek’s child then?”
“Yes.”
Rin pulled himself onto the counter. “And now you’re here.”
“I am the science officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.”
“Vacation?”
“An unexpected misadventure.”
“Really?”
“Accidental marriage.”
“Spock!” Kirk said alarmed.
Spock tilted his head to view the Captain better. “The Angel-Demons use information as currency. They value perspective over possessions. They are a physiological interested race.”
Kirk frowned. “Oh…kay.”
