Chapter 1

The alarm on my little Nokia phone blared, startling me from my sleep. At least it managed to get me up, whereas, on most days, I would sleep in which wasn't good for my job. In case you were wondering, I happen to work at a small cafe full of idiotic and immature teenagers that liked to 'hang out'. I'm not going to take out much hate on teenagers because I am one myself. At the age of 18, I was able to move away from my foster parents and live my own life.

I rolled out of bed, not-so-gracefully hitting the wooden floor that I couldn't afford to get carpet. It was cold and grimy, another rude wake-up call. I missed my mum. She was a beautiful woman and unlike my dad,i she took care of me. Until she got shot... My foster home told me it was an accident but it couldn't have been. People don't just get shot! I don't even know where my dad is, for allIam  aware of, he could be dead too. But then again I could be wrong. We had nothing. Just our benefit money and a shabby, tiny apartment.

I rubbed my eyes and made my way into the bathroom to get ready. I couldn't afford makeup or long showers so it didn't take me long to get ready.

I exited the shower and put on my uniform which consisted of a white button up crop top with a black skater skirt and black heels. I had a name badge that looked old and worn out but you could see my name almost clearly.

I used my fingers to brush my hair down then tied it into a pony tail. I checked the time on my Nokia and gasped. If I didn't leave now, I would be late, and I had already been late twice this week. Looks like no breakfast for me today, not that I had anything special..I mean, all I had was bread, milk and eggs. It would take ages to make something as well with just a frying pan. My phone was literally the main tech devise in my apartment. Kinda sad, but true.

I ran out ofthe apartment, my heels clicking wildly on the concrete ground. Sweet Treats, the cafe I worked at, was a ten minute walk away from the block, but if I ran, I'm sure I could make it in the three minutes I had left.

Eventually, i did get there and was greeted by my co-worker\best friend when I burst through the door. "Where have you been Lola?!" She whisper hissed at me, dragging me in. I was panting way too much that I was unable to reply. "You're lucky she's in the toilet right now or she would have fired you for sure if she saw you come in at this time." I pulled my apron of the rack in the storeroom and I secured it round my waist.

"Sorry, i don't know what took me so long. How long has boss been in the bathroom?" I managed to breathe out once I regained my breath.

"Few minutes. I'll just tell her you were here on time. Quick, start up some eggs or something so it looks like you've been here for long. She's coming. Go!" Taking Monica's advice, I ran to the kitchen and fired up some omelettes.

"I see you've finally made it Lola." I turn to face my boss. A thirty-something year old that was fat and grumpy all day every day. A woman who hated me, for a reason I don't know, but she's the only person that will keep me in a job for longer than a month.

"Yes boss. Just cooking some eggs for our oncoming customers." I gave her a fake smile and turned to look at my omelette. Indidnt want to face her too long, she'd know i was lying. She'd know I came in late.

"So I see. Ah! That reminds me, girls, there haven't been many customers this winter so I'm afraid I have to cut down your paychecks back $5." She said.

Just my luck.

And my weekly pay wasn't coming till Friday, in a couple days. I could hold back on food...and not use electricity. Not that electricity even worked where i lived! Living in a scrappy torn up block of apartments that people rented for one night stands, I get used to the dirt and the smells of sweat that still linger around the place.

Just then, the bell attached to the door dings and our attention is turned to Jamal, my boyfriend. I guess I forgot to mention, that through the scrappy life I'm living currently, there is one person who loves me for me, and manages to make me forget about my shit lifestyle.

Immediately, Boss, whose name is Rosaline, rushes up to my boyfriend, acting way too sweet for my liking. "Hello s,ir! What can I get for you?" Her smile was stretched to her ears and even Jamal was freaked out.

"I...uh...I'm just here to see Lola." He said, backing away from Boss. Rosaline instantly frowned and sent a glare my way.

"Over there." She said gruffly and stomped towards the storeroom. I saw Jamal walking to me and so i did the same, meeting him halfway at a booth.

"Watch the eggs!" I called back to Monica, who gives me a thumbs up and focuses on the eggs.

"Business is going well." Jamal stated as he looked around the quite empty room and slipped off his shoe.

"No need to state the obvious Jamal, I have eyes." I said sarcastically, I swear, I love Jamal, he knows how to cheer me up even through my roughest days.

"Do you want some breakfast? I could make your special." I offered, changing the subject before it got too weird.

"Yeah sure. Extra chocolate sauce please!"

"Coming right up love" I winked at him before I stood up, headed to the kitchen to whip up some pancakes.

"Rember the extra chocolate sauce!" He called while I was flipping his last pancake. Another man had come into the shop, but he only ordered a $2 coffee and was out as quick as he came.

"Don't worry I remember." I said as I layered on sathe uce. This was yummy, so rich and delicious but I knew better than to eat a customer's food, even when that customer was my boyfriend. Cafe rules.

I handed him a plate and walked back to the kitchen to clear up the dishes, when I was finishing my last utensil, Monica approached me.

"Boss isn't happy. She thinks your boyfriend is distracting you. But we all know she's jealous of your insanely hot boyfriend." Monica whispered. I sent a glance to Jamal who happened to be going through his phone and chewing his pancakes slowly.

"Well s,he can go find someone else to fuck. Oh w,ait who would want to? Her ass is so big she can't even got through the door! " I'm a bitch people.Ge t used to it.

"Shh s,he might hear you!" She said trying to stiffle a laugh.
And with that s,he walked to the counter to sort out the till. I just sighed and carried on working. There wasn't much to do as no one really came in.

Soon, I saw Jamal bring his plate which previously had many pancakes stacked on it with an excessive amount of chocolate sauce. "I'll wash it up." I said as I took the plate from him.

"Okay, Lola, I have to rush, but I want to take you out tonight so I'll come back to pick you up after work okay?"

I sighed. "Okay."

"Don't look so sad, look forward to tonight." He said deviously. Then he was out the door. Monica would go on her phone and play things or text people while Rosaline would stay in the storeroom with a bottle of wine, crying about how her husband left her.

I would just sit on the counter, waiting for something to happen and on most days, nothing ever did...
