Day Four At "Bootcamp"

It was past 8:00am when Ben woke up and realized that the sun was up already. He could not understand why the commander did not come to wake everyone early as he did in the past few days.

"Hey guy! I heard you are part of the competitors for today's competition, is that true?" A boy who sleeps on a bed beside Ben's asked. "Er.....yes but I haven't competed in a Bootcamp before so I decided to try for the first time" Ben answered.

"Oh so you think its a fun fair right?" The boy asked again this time looked a little too interested to know what Ben was thinking about the competition. "Well I have heard somethings about it and I think its gonna be fun" Ben replied"

The boy was silent for a moment then he stood up from his bed and walked closer to Ben gazing at him like a snake that is about to catch its pray. "Do you think you have all it takes to compete today?" The boy asked. "What makes you think I don't have what it takes to compete amongst my pairs" Ben shrugged as he picked up his towel and a brush. "Look guy I don't know why you ask those questions but for whatever reasons it may be, I think its not worth the attitude you are giving me now. Excuse me I have to go now" Ben replied as he made his way to the direction of the bathroom.

Later that day, the commander came to the boys hostel and called out all the contestants including Ben for a brief meeting.

"For those of you who have been here before, I believe you know how this competition works. But this year there is a change in the way we compete. Its gonna be boys against the girls so we have some advantages over the girls" he said with a little smile in his face and continued. "So I Dont think we will be needing too much guys for this competition. I and the pastors had a meeting and we agreed to use just five boys and five girls. So if I call your name, just stand to your feet and come to my left side Ok!" "Yes sir" the boys ecoed.

"Gabriel, Michael, max, Ben and Joseph. I choosed you guys because your teem did well the last time but Ben has not been here before so I decided to give him a chance to ride along side champions. So guys prepare your selves. The starters are Ben, Max and Joseph. Gabriel you will be the one to do the jungle run and Michael will do the puzzle and we win! Right everyone" The commander said. "Yes sir" the boys replied and walked away to get themselves ready.

At 5pm, everyone gathered in the open field for the competition.

A man dressed in a shinny suit walked to the heart for the field with a mic in his hand and called out the candidates to make their way to the table at the far end of the field there the starters are to begin the competition.

The girls were ready to go against the boys without fear in their faces. Ben had chills running down his spine as he walked briskly to the table where he saw steam coming out of one cooler that smelled like coffee and a bowl filled with eggs, bottles of cold minerals and pair of good looking African food.

The boys and girls quickly shared themselves to where they felt they wanted to compete, Ben decided to go for the coffee and egg.

He stood there with a girl that looked like she was older than the other girls in the competition.

The man in the suit had instructed them that there would begin when they hear the sound of his toy gun.

There were supervisors who would disqualify the candidates who tries to cheat. Ben was ready to drink the delicious looking coffee but was unsure of how hot it would be if he tasted it.

About thirty seconds later the man in the shinny suit pulled the trigger and the candidates started. Ben quickly picked up a cup and fetched a cup full of coffee but the girl did not completely fill hers. Ben saw her cup and noticed it was not completely filled, so he wanted to pour some coffee back into the cooler then the supervisor told him that anything that goes out cannot return and if he pours it to the floor he would be disqualified. The only option Ben had was to drink it all up. The girl had already drank hers half way when Ben started to drink his. The moment the coffee touched his tongue, he felt like he just poured magma into his tongue and wished he could change from coffee to the African food. He had no choice but to finish the coffee so he too a quick gulp and blew air into the coffee but it was not very helpful as the hotness of coffee made him see stars.

He sipped it every two seconds until it was all finished then he took the boilled egg and ate it with the shell as he took a quick glance around and notice the steam coming out of his mouth and nose.

The girl finished almost the same time and ate the egg with the shell too like Ben did but unfortunately for her, Ben was faster.

After the starters had finished their part, the jungle runners began almost immediately but as they both ran, the boy not tripped over a stone and fell to the floor and quickly got up to continue but the girl had already crossed the end line before he could reach her.

The last activity was the puzzle.

The girl for the finished the puzzle first before the boy and emerged as the winner of the competition.

Prizes were given to the boys who won the first level but still the feeling of failure hovered their faces and made them sad.

Ben could not taste anything with his tongue for hours after the competition because the coffee had burnt his tongue and made it numb. He felt really bad that they lost to the girls after all his efforts to the competition.
