the smell of roast beef filled sonya's nose as she walked into the kitchen. the meat glistened under the candlelight. carissa was already digging into her meal as sonya sat down.

"wow, this is really good!"

carissa managed to mumble with her stuffed mouth. sonya rolled her eyes, thinking how impolite her sister was. she shouldn't talk with her mouth full.

"thank you, carissa. i'm glad you like it."

the cook smiled gently as she held her empty glass of wine. her food was untouched. that was odd, because madison loved tasting her wonderful creations.

"sonya, aren't you going to eat anything?"

the cook asked as she looked at sonya's bowl. she seemed disappointed that she hadn't tried her food. sonya nodded as she replied,

"of course, madison, i just need to use the restroom first."

the cook smiled politely as sonya left her seat. sonya walked out of the kitchen, the wonderful smells still lingering in her nose. she rushed up the staircase with a light grip on the rail.

soon she would enjoy a wonderful meal. she started to slow down as she saw the lights in the restroom on. no one was in the house except madison, carissa, and herself. who else could it be?

sonya creaked the door open. it couldn't be a burglar; there wasn't anything precious in there. maybe someone forgot to turn off the light?

the door hit the wall. a girl was huddled in the corner. her face was covered by her wavy black hair. she rocked back and forth. mumbling. mumbling. mumbling.

"hello?"

sonya asked as she tilted her head to get a better look at the girl. the girl stopped rocking as she looked up. her eyes were dead. her mouth twitched. her pale face rested on her knees. it was madison.

"weren't you just downstairs?"

suddenly, the floor felt cold. sonya's eyes widened. her hands shook. she opened her mouth to scream but all she managed was a whisper.

"carissa."

sonya sprinted down the stairs. her mind swirled as she ran. she rushed past the startled cat as she ran into the kitchen. her eyes looked at her sister.

her sister's body had dropped to the floor. her eyes were lifeless. her bowl had fallen off the table and cracked on the hardwood. food was splattered everywhere.

madison raised her full glass of red wine to her lips. she lowered the drink as she noticed sonya.

"oh you're back! aren't you going to eat anything?"
