This is a story about Dehlia and Ally Jones. Everyone called Dehlia DJ for short. DJ is 17 years old taking care of her 11 year old sister Ally because their father has been in the military for 10 years and their mother recently passed away. It's winter and their father is coming home to visit them for the first time in 6 years. They are so excited about the news! DJ and Ally wanted to surprise their dad so DJ wants to teach Ally to ice skate. But this exciting family time with their dad might not be as joyful as they planned...

Their father was going to arrive in just a few minutes and he would meet them at the lake. They skated around on the frozen water until finally they saw someone. A man walked towards them. He held something behind his back and wore a camo uniform. He glared at them as he got closer. They couldn't see his face because he wore a large hat that cast a shadow over his face. Ally grasped DJ's shaking hand. DJ squinted her eyes. As the man got closer she began to see his sparkling blue eyes. A grin spread across her face. The man threw off his hat revealing the biggest smile you've ever seen. "DAD!" Ally shrieked. She charged at him and threw her arms around him as if she would never let him go. DJ smiled even more and ran to get in on the hug. Both DJ and Ally wobbled a little as try ran in their skates. They all began to cry with happiness to see their dad again. They only had a week with him though. But to them a week with their father was like a lifetime. Just seeing him was unbelievable. DJ handed her dad a box. He opened it and found a pair of ice Skates just his size. He smiled again then they all went back down to the frozen lake making sure that they didn't let go of their father's hand.

DJ helped her dad get his skates on while Ally went back on the ice. "Oh that reminds me." Said Mr.Jones, "I have something for you as well!" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heart shaped locket. "Here." He handed the locket to her. DJ opened the locket and almost cried again. Inside was an old photo of Ally, Mrs.Jones, Mr.Jones, and her all together. Ally and DJ had matching yellow dresses and their long blonde hair up in curly ponytails, their mother in a pink dress, and their dad all dressed up in his military uniform. DJ wrapped her arms around her dad. "Thank you! I love it." She put the locket around her neck and planned on keeping it there forever. Then they joined Ally on the ice. Ally looked at him hopefully. "I didn't forget about you!" He reached in his pocket and pulled out a handful of candy and smushed it into Ally's hand. She giggled and hugged him. "Thank you!" She yelled. DJ was doing some twirls on the ice and invited Ally to join her. "Daddy look what DJ thought me!" She twirled a little then a lot and kept on going. Her dad clapped and smiled. But then, DJ and Ally both were twirling, they couldn't really see each other, they ran right into each other and both fell. They fell hard and made a small crack in the ice. DJ's locket tore off and slid across the ice farther into the frozen lake. "Sorry DJ" Ally said, "I'll get your locket for you." Ally skated out farther to get the locket. "Be careful Ally! The ice is thinner out there!" Her dad called to her. DJ and her father watched as Ally went after the locket. DJ's eyes widened when she noticed the crack that they had made in the growing. It was Ally. She was to close to the crack so the ice around the crack was breaking more from her weight. "ALLY!" DJ screamed. Her sister turned and looked at her, locket dangling from her hand. "I got it!" She said with a smile. She chucked the locket as hard as she could across the ice towards DJ. DJ caught the locket and handed it to her father. He looked at her and knew. He clutched the locket as he watched DJ charge fast and hard towards Ally. DJ pushed hard against the ice to get to Ally. Ally looked at her confused. DJ stopped. The ice around her was cracking too. She weighed a lot more than Ally. She tried to tell Ally to move or to do something but it was too late. The ice around Ally cracked even more. Ally finally noticed and tried to skate away. But she couldn't. There was another crack and she knew that if she even moved at all that she would fall through. By now their dad was rushing onto the ice staying away from the cracks. But he was just too heavy for the thin ice. The ice was cracking beneath him too. They all looked at each other. It was complete silence. They all knew that the ice was going to break. Silence. They all just closed their eyes to think. But then...crack splash! A scream! Everyone opened their eyes. "ALLY!!!" screamed DJ seeing the whole in the ice. Then her dad ran to the whole. "Dad?!?!?" Too late. He plunged into the freezing water. DJ stood there crying and shaking and worrying. She bent down carefully picking up the locket. Crack! Quickly thinking she dove to the side just to see the ice crash into the water right where she had been standing seconds before. Suddenly her dad came up from the water a threw Ally onto the ice. He crawled out if the water soaking wet and shivering but only caring about Ally lying there. He wrapped her in his jacket, picker her up, and skated as fast as he could to get back to land without stopping without saying a single word. DJ followed him scared and worried...

Without even taking off their skates they quickly piled into the car. DJ gave ally her jacket and they speeded to the hospital. Not only was Ally completely freezing but she also had gotten cut by the ice and she was having an asthma attack and didn't have her inhaler. When they arrived at the hospital their dad carried Ally into the hospital and went straight to the front desk. "This is an emergency! My daughter is far below average body heat is suffering from an asthma attack and is covered in cuts! Get a doctor NOW!" the lady at the front desk was startled. She screamed for a doctor for a freezing patient. Immediately a doctor came out with a hospital bed and dozens of thick blankets. He put Ally on the bed and wrapped her on the blankets. The doctor also gave one to Mr.Jones but he immediately gave the blanket to his daughter. "Sir you look freezing. You need a blanket." Said the doctor. " I am freezing." He said, "but she needs it more." And he stopped at that. The doctor wheeled Ally into a room and quickly got her an inhaler. He kept warming her and ensuring that everything was going to be fine. The doctor kept paging in more and more nurses for things like dry clothes and towels and bandages and other things. Mr.Jones and DJ sat watching and worrying. DJ hugged her dad "I love you." She said. He hugged her back. "She's going to be alright. I promise." He whispered to DJ.

The next morning DJ and her dad woke up to see an empty hospital bed. "Dad? Where is she?" He looked puzzled "I don't know..." He said. They got up and went to talk to the women at the front desk. "Where is my daughter?" He asked the lady. "E.R. Room 12 go quick!" She replied. His faced turned white, "thank you." He said, his voice was cracking. He began to run down the hospital halls until they reached room 12. He threw the door open. "She had an allergic reaction to some caramel!" Said the doctor. "Caramel?" He said. "Yes! Do you have any idea where she got caramel?!" Urged the doctor. "No I don't have clu-", "The candy!" Yelled DJ. "Dad you have her caramel candies!" He suddenly froze. Then he tilted his head down and put his hand on his forehead. DJ could make out tears running down his face. He looked back up red and crying. "I'm so sorry." He pushed out the words with difficulty, "I- I had n-no idea... I didn't know she was a-allergic to caramel." He walked over to where Ally was laying "honey I'm so...s-s-...I'm so sorry!" He dropped his head on her chest and cried. "I love you!" He hugged her tight like he planned to never let go. He couldn't let go. He couldn't. DJ looked at him sad and worried and sort of expectingly. He let go if her so slowly, so carefully, so forcefully as though it took every but of strength he had to let go. He walked to DJ and he looked at the doctor. He stared at the doctor for a moment then turned around and left.

It was night time and Mr.Jones and DJ were sleeping in chairs next to Ally's hospital bed. The doctors had treated her allergic reaction but she still hasn't woken. It was 1:00 am when DJ and her dad woke up. They were awaken by...by..."ALLY!" Her dad yelled, "You're okay!" Ally reached over and hugged her dad. They hugged for a long time and DJ joined them. "thank you dad" ally whispered. He smiled and hugged tighter.

The next morning the doctor came in. "Ally..." He looked at her, "you are going to be perfectly fine." Mr.Jones took a deep breath if relief. DJ smiled. The doctor smiled back and then left. Mr. Jones looked at ally. He handed her a harmful of candy. "Caramel FREE!" he said. Ally giggled and took the candy. "Let's go home." He said. They left the hospital and drove back to their house. When they walked in the house they were shocked! There were balloons and a cake in the table. There was a note on the table that said to go into the empty room that use to be their Mother's room. So they did. To their surprise the room was full with all of their fathers stuff. "Dad!" Yelled Ally "you're staying!!!!!!!" Then he ran and hugged them both tight "yes I am! I've been in the military for 10 years haven't you noticed?! It's time to come home!"
